The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selected five zonal teams from five different geographical locations of India for playing against each other in the Duleep Trophy, 1991-92. The teams were selected mainly depending on the zonal format used in the Ranji Trophy and the BCCI named the teams as the East Zone, North Zone, West Zone, Central Zone and South Zone.
The first match of Duleep Trophy, 1991-92 was played between the teams of Central Zone and South Zone and the two teams played the match at Bombay from 08-11 January, 1992. The Central Zone skipper, G Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first in the match. The decision was not proved to be a good one, as the Central Zone batsmen failed miserably and got all out for only 173 runs in their first innings. V Prasad caused most of the damage to the Central Zone batting line-up, as he took 6 wickets for only 40 runs on behalf of South Zone. While replying to the small first innings total of Central Zone, the South Zone batsmen played extremely well and scored a mammoth total of 491 runs in their first innings. R Singh became the top scorer for South Zone with a score of 108 runs to his name and A Kumble (88) and M Sridhar (56) provided good support to him. P Vaidya took 5 wickets for 113 runs on behalf of Central Zone in South Zone's first innings. Trailing by a huge margin of 318 runs, the Central Zone batsmen once again failed to apply themselves on the crease properly and they got all out for only 268 runs in their second innings. Thus, the South Zone team won the match with a huge margin of an innings and 50 runs and the team also entered into the Semi-Finals of Duleep Trophy, 1991-92.
The teams of North Zone and South Zone appeared against each other in the first Semi-final of Duleep Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was held at Surat from 15-18 January, 1992. Winning the toss, the North Zone captain, C Sharma took the decision of fielding first and invited the South Zone team to bat first in the match. Put into bat first, the South Zone batsmen could not play that much well and got all out for a small score of 220 runs in their first innings. A Wassan became the star for North Zone, as he took 6 wickets for only 72 runs in South Zone's first innings. The North Zone batsmen made a wonderful use of the advantageous situation the team was thanks to the bowlers and they scored a huge total of 533 runs in their first innings, while replying to the small first innings total of South Zone. V Yadav scored the highest runs for North Zone with 201 runs to his name and A Sharma also played well to score 89 runs. The South Zone batsmen played in the second innings with a huge deficit of 313 runs in the first innings and they again failed to play well. They could score only 230 runs before getting all out in the second innings and as a result, the North Zone team won the match with a wonderful margin of an innings and 83 runs. The North Zone team also reached the Final of Duleep Trophy, 1991-92 by winning this match.
In the second Semi-Final of Duleep Trophy, 1991-92, the teams of West Zone and East Zone played against each other at Bombay from 15-18 January, 1992. The toss of the match was won by the West Zone skipper, S Sugwekar and he took the right decision of fielding first in the match. Being invited to bat first in the match, the East Zone batsmen faced a lot of troubles and got all out for a small score of only 185 runs in their first innings. The West Zone bowlers like R Kulkarni and A Kuruvilla took 4 and 3 wickets, respectively in East Zone's first innings and helped their team in restricting the opponent's innings to such a low total. The West Zone batsmen played according to their merit and fame in their first innings and scored a mammoth total of 682 runs for 9 wickets to take a huge lead of 497 runs over East Zone. V Kambli made the premium contribution to West Zone's first innings with a splendid double century of 208 runs and S Sugwekar (158) and K Chauhan (123) also played wonderfully for West Zone. Avinash Kumar took 5 wickets for 153 runs on behalf of East Zone in West Zone's first innings, before Sugwekar declared it on the score of 682-9. The East Zone batsmen were clearly looking to be uneasy while batting in their second innings with a deficit of 497 runs and they eventually got all out for only 142 runs in the second innings. S Patil and A Kuruvilla took 5 and 4 wickets, respectively on behalf of West Zone in East Zone's second innings. Thus, the West Zone team clinched a huge victory of an innings and 355 runs in the match and also entered into the Final of Duleep Trophy, 1991-92 to play against North Zone.
The Final of Duleep Trophy, 1991-92 saw the teams of North Zone and West Zone playing against each other at Valsad from 21-25 January, 1992. The North Zone skipper, C Sharma won the toss and took the decision of batting first in the match. He got good support from his batsmen, as the North Zone team scored a moderate total of 279 runs in the first innings. R Puri became the top scorer for North Zone with 58 runs to his name. M Narula bowled very well for West Zone and took 5 wickets for 48 runs in North Zone's first innings. Though the bowlers successfully restricted the North Zone's first innings to a moderate total, the West Zone batsmen failed to capitalise on the advantageous position and got all out for only 216 runs in their first innings. C Sharma bowled brilliantly for North Zone and took 6 wickets for 65 runs in West Zone's first innings. After attaining a good lead of 77 runs in the first innings, the North Zone batsmen played wonderfully in their second innings and scored a huge total of 393 runs. A Kuruvilla took 6 wickets for 98 runs on behalf of West Zone in North Zone's second innings. Thus, the West Zone team required a huge 471 runs in the second innings to win the match, however, the West Zone batsmen failed to achieve the target. They could not play well in the second innings and scored only 220 runs, before getting all out. The North Zone team won the match by a huge margin of 236 runs and also clinched the championship title in Duleep Trophy, 1991-92.
