7 teams participated under the Elite Group B in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the teams were not coming from any specific region of India. The BCCI selected the teams from different parts of India for playing against each other in the premium domestic cricket tournament in India. The teams included the likes of Assam, Orissa, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Baroda and Tamil Nadu and all of them gave their best efforts for becoming one of the top two teams in the group. The teams were aiming the top two spots in the group, because only the top two teams were allowed to advance to the knock out level of the tournament. The teams like Baroda and Tamil Nadu entered into the knock out level from the Elite Group B, as they earned the highest points from the group matches.

The teams of Assam and Orissa played against each other in the first of the Elite Group B matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the two teams played the match at Guwahati from 09-12 November, 2002. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Assam team earned 1 point from the match, while the Orissa team remained pointless. The Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh teams appeared in the second match of the group and the match was held at Surat from 09-12 November, 2002. The Gujarat team earned 1 point from the drawn match and the Uttar Pradesh team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the group saw the teams of Punjab and Baroda playing against each other at Mohali from 09-12 November, 2002. The drawn match saw the Punjab team earning 1 point and the Baroda team remaining pointless.

The fourth of the Elite Group B matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 was played between the teams of Gujarat and Assam and the match took place at Valsad from 17-20 November, 2002. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Gujarat team earned 1 point from it. However, the Assam team could not earn even a single point from the match. The next match of the group involved the teams like Orissa and Punjab and the match was held at Cuttack from 17-20 November, 2002. The drawn match saw the Punjab team earning 1 point from it and it also saw the Orissa team remaining pointless. The teams of Tamil Nadu and Baroda played against each other in the next match of the group and the two teams played the match at Chennai from 17-20 November, 2002. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time, as well and the Tamil Nadu team earned 1 point from it. The Baroda team failed to earn any points from the match.

The match between the teams of Assam and Punjab was the seventh of the Elite Group B matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the match was held at Guwahati from 27-30 November, 2002. Clinching a victory of 89 runs, the Punjab team earned 2 points from the match and the Assam team failed to earn any points from the match. The teams of Orissa and Baroda were involved in the next match of the Elite Group B and the match took place at Cuttack from 27-30 November, 2002. The winner of the match was the Baroda team with a margin of an innings and 141 runs and the team also earned 3 points from the match. However, the Orissa team failed to earn any points from the match. The match between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh was also held during the same timing from 27-30 November, 2002 and the two teams played the match at Chennai. The Uttar Pradesh team earned 1 point from the drawn match and the Tamil Nadu team remained pointless.

The Gujarat team played against the Baroda team in the tenth of the Elite Group B matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the match was held at Ahmedabad from 19-22 December, 2002. The drawn match saw the Gujarat team earning 1 point and the Baroda team remaining pointless in it. Then, the teams of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh met with each other in the next match of the zone and the match was organised at Mohali from 19-22 December, 2002. The Punjab team earned 2 points from the match by clinching a victory of 47 runs and the Uttar Pradesh team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the group saw the Tamil Nadu and Orissa teams playing against each other at Chennai from 19-22 December, 2002. Playing very well in the match, the Tamil Nadu team earned 3 points by clinching a victory of an innings and 36 runs and the Orissa team remained pointless in the match.

The next match of the Elite Group B was played between the teams of Baroda and Assam and the two teams played the match at Vadodara from 28-31 December, 2002. The Baroda team earned 2 points from the match with the help of a 7 wickets` win and the Assam team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the group saw the teams of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat playing against each other at Chennai from 28-31 December, 2002. The Tamil Nadu clinched a huge victory of 9 wickets in the match for earning 2 points and the Gujarat team remained pointless in the match. The last of the Elite Group B matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 involved the teams like Uttar Pradesh and Orissa and the two teams played the match at Lucknow from 28-31 December, 2002. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and none of the teams became successful to earn even a single point from the match.
