The West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01 consisted of all the 5 teams that had been participating in the tournament on a regular basis for the previous several editions. Most of the teams were representing different states from the Western region of India in the premium domestic cricket tournament in India and the teams included the likes of Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Gujarat, Baroda and Mumbai. They competed with each other with a view to become one of the top three teams in the zone so that they could get a chance for competing in the knock out level of the tournament. Though all the teams tried their best, only the teams like Mumbai, Maharashtra and Baroda eventually became successful to do so from the West Zone. The Mumbai, Maharashtra and Baroda teams earned total of 21, 20 and 19 points, respectively from the zonal level league matches for getting an entry into the Super League stage.
The Maharashtra and Gujarat teams were involved in the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01 and the match was held at Karad from 25-28 November, 2000. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Maharashtra and Gujarat teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The second match of the zone was played between the teams of Baroda and Saurashtra and the match took place at Baroda from 25-28 November, 2000. The match between the teams of Saurashtra and Maharashtra was the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01 and the match took place at Rajkot from 02-05 December, 2000. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra team earning 5 points and Saurashtra earning 3 points from it. The Saurashtra team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Mumbai team at Gandhidham from 08-11 December, 2000. The Mumbai team won the drawn match for having a lead in the first innings and also earned 5 points from the match. The Saurashtra team earned 3 points from the match, as well. The next match of the zone saw the teams of Baroda and Maharashtra playing against each other at Baroda from 08-11 December, 2000. The Maharashtra and Baroda teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
The seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01 was played between the teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra and the match was held at Surat from 23-26 December, 2000. The Gujarat team earned 8 points from the match by clinching a victory of 6 wickets and the Saurashtra team remained pointless in the match. The teams of Mumbai and Baroda appeared in the next match of the West Zone and the match took place at Mumbai from 23-26 December, 2000. The Mumbai and Baroda teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Baroda team then played against the Gujarat team in the next match of the zone, which was held at Ahmedabad from 29 December, 2000 - 01 January, 2001. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 5 points and Gujarat earning 3 points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2000-01 involved the teams like Maharashtra and Mumbai and the two teams played the match at Pune from 29 December, 2000 - 01 January, 2001. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Maharashtra and Mumbai teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match.
