The 5 teams that played against each other under the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 included the likes of Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Baroda and Saurashtra. All the teams were the regular participants in the tournament for the previous several editions and they were mainly representing different states from the Western region of India. The teams played against each other in the zonal level league matches with the same objective of becoming one of the top three teams in the zone. The main reason behind the teams' this objective was that, only the top three teams from each zone were allowed to advance to the Super League stage of the tournament. The teams like Mumbai, Baroda and Saurashtra entered into the Super League stage from the West Zone, as they earned total of 24, 20 and 14 points, at the end of the zonal level league matches.
The teams of Mumbai and Maharashtra played against each other in the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 and the two teams played the match at Mumbai from 15-18 November, 1999. The Mumbai team won the match with a wonderful margin of an innings and 11 runs for earning 8 points and the Maharashtra team remained pointless in the match. The second match of the zone saw the teams of Baroda and Gujarat playing against each other at Vadodara from 15-18 November, 1999. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Gujarat teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The Gujarat team appeared in the third match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Saurashtra team at Rajkot from 22-25 November, 1999. The Saurashtra and Gujarat teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
The Baroda and Mumbai teams were involved in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 and the match was held at Vadodara from 22-25 November, 1999. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 5 points and Mumbai earning 3 points from it. The Maharashtra team played against the Saurashtra team in the next match of the West Zone and the match took place at Pune from 27-30 December, 1999. The Maharashtra and Saurashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Gujarat and Mumbai and the match was held at Surat from 27-30 December, 1999. The Mumbai team showed extraordinary performances in the match and clinched a huge victory of 10 wickets for earning 8 points from it. The Gujarat team could not earn any points from the match.
The Saurashtra team appeared in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 also and this time, it played against the Mumbai team at Mumbai from 03-06 January, 2000. The Mumbai and Saurashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. Then the teams of Maharashtra and Baroda played against each other in the next match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Pune from 03-06 January, 2000. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Maharashtra teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The Baroda team then played against the Saurashtra team in the next match of the West Zone and the match took place at Rajkot from 10-13 January, 2000. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Baroda and Saurashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 saw the teams of Gujarat and Maharashtra playing against each other at Ahmedabad from 10-13 January, 2000. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra team earning 5 points and Gujarat earning 3 points from it.
