The East Zone saw the teams of Orissa, Bihar and Bengal entering into the Super League stage.

5 teams participated under the East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 and all the teams were the regular participants of the tournament for the previous several editions. The Ranji Trophy is well famous as the best domestic cricket tournament in India and the East Zone teams in the zone were mainly representing different states from the Eastern region of India, in the tournament. The teams included the likes of Orissa, Assam, Tripura, Bihar and Bengal and all of them gave their best efforts for becoming one of the top three teams in the zone. The teams also tried their best to secure a berth in the Super League stage of the tournament, however, only the teams like Orissa, Bihar and Bengal could eventually do so from the East Zone. The Orissa, Bihar and Bengal teams earned total of 23, 22 and 21 points, respectively from the zonal level league matches and they proceeded to the Super League stage for competing with the top teams of the other zones.

The Bengal and Assam teams played against each other in the first of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 and the match was held at Calcutta from 12-15 November, 1999. The Bengal and Assam teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time. The second match of the zone was played between the teams of Tripura and Bihar and the two teams played the match at Agartala form 12-15 November, 1999. The Bihar team got a good start in the tournament, as it won the match by a margin of 51 runs to earn 8 points. However, the Tripura team failed to earn any points from the match. The Tripura team appeared in the third match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Bengal team at Agartala from 22-25 November, 1999. The Bengal team played very well in the match and earned 8 points from it by clinching a victory of an innings and 252 runs. However, the Tripura team remained pointless in the match.

The teams of Orissa and Bihar met with each other in the fourth of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 and the two teams played the match at Cuttack from 22-25 November, 1999. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Orissa and Bihar teams with 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The Orissa team then played against the Bengal team in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Cuttack from 25-28 November, 1999. The drawn match saw the Orissa and Bengal teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Assam and Tripura and the match took place at Assam from 25-28 November, 1999. The winner of the match was the Assam team with a very good margin of an innings and 56 runs and the team also earned 8 points from the match. The Tripura team failed to earn any points from the match.

The match between the teams of Orissa and Assam was the seventh of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 and the match was organised at Orissa from 03-06 January, 2000. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Orissa and Assam teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The next match of the zone saw the teams of Bihar and Bengal playing against each other at Jamshedpur from 03-06 January, 2000. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Bengal and Bihar teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match. The Orissa team then played against the Tripura team in the next match of the East Zone and the match was held at Puri from 12-15 January, 2000. The match was won by the Orissa team with a margin of an innings and 182 runs for earning 8 points and the Tripura team remained pointless in the match. The last of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1999-2000 involved the teams of Bihar and Assam and the two teams played the match at Jamshedpur from 12-15 January, 2000. The Bihar team earned 8 points from the match by clinching a victory of 191 runs and the Assam team failed to earn any points from the match.
