27 teams played against each other in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and all the teams were the regular participants of the tournament. The organisers of the tournament, the BCCI divided the teams into five different zones and it actually formed the zones depending on their geographical positions. The zones were named as the Central Zone, East Zone, North Zone, South Zone and West Zone. The teams first played against each other in their respective zones and then the top three teams from each zone were promoted to the Super League stage of the tournament. After that, the top six teams form the Super League stage competed against each other in the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 for the championship title. The participating teams in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 included the likes of Andhra, Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Bihar, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Orissa, Punjab, Railways, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Services, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha.

Ranji Trophy, 1997-98, Central Zone League Matches: The Central Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 saw the participation of 5 teams, all the regular ones that were mainly coming from the Central region of India. The Ranji Trophy has earned a lot of recognition and fame all over the world for being the premium domestic cricket tournament in India. The participating teams in the Central Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 were mainly representing different states from the Central region of India and they included the likes of Railways, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. All the teams tried their best to claim one of the top three spots in the zone and to secure a berth in the Super League stage of the tournament. The Ranji Trophy is quite famous for being one of the most popular domestic cricket tournaments in India. The teams were representing various states from the Eastern region of India and they included the likes of Tripura, Assam, Orissa, Bihar and Bengal. The teams played against each other in the zonal level league matches with the same objective of becoming one of the top three teams in the zone. The teams also tried their best to get a chance for playing in the Super League stage of the tournament, by earning the highest points from the zonal level league matches. However, only the teams like Bihar, Bengal and Orissa could eventually do so from the East Zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1997-98, North Zone League Matches: The 6 teams that participated under the North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 were mainly coming from the Northern region of India, representing various states from that region. The Ranji Trophy has already established itself as one of the most popular domestic cricket tournaments in all over the world. All the North Zone teams in the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 were the regular participants in the tournament and they included the likes of Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Services and Punjab. The teams gave their best efforts t claim one of the top three spots in the zone and they also tried for securing a berth in the Super League stage of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98. However, only the teams like Delhi, Haryana and Punjab eventually became successful to do so from the zone, as they earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches.

Ranji Trophy, 1997-98, South Zone League Matches: The South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 saw the participation of 6 teams, all the regular participants of the tournament. The tournament is known to be the premium and most popular domestic cricket tournament in India and the South Zone teams in the tournament were mainly representing different states from that region. The teams included the likes of Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad, Kerala, Goa and Karnataka and all the teams tried their best to become one of the top three teams in the zone. Securing a berth in the Super League stage of the tournament was also another principal objective of the teams, however, only the teams like Hyderabad, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu eventually did so from the South Zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1997-98, West Zone League Matches: There were 5 teams played against each other under the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 and all the teams were the regular participants of the tournament. The teams were mainly representing different states from the Western region of India in the premium domestic cricket tournament of India. The teams included the likes of Mumbai, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Baroda and Saurashtra and all of them gave their best efforts to become one of the top three teams in the zone. The teams also had the intention of securing a berth in the Super League stage of the tournament, however, only the teams like Baroda, Mumbai and Maharashtra eventually did so from the West Zone. The teams earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches to enter into the Super League stage of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98.

Ranji Trophy, 1997-98, Super League Matches: After the completion of the league matches in all the five zones, the organisers of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98, BCCI allowed 15 teams to enter into the Super League stage. The Ranji Trophy is quite famous for being the premium domestic cricket tournament in India and the Super League stage of the tournament comprised of three teams from each of the five zones. The BCCI divided the teams into three different groups, namely Group A, Group B and Group C and the teams competed with each other for getting an entry into the knock out level of the tournament. The top six teams from the Super League stage were eventually given the permission to compete in the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98. The teams that played in the Super League stage of Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 included the likes of Karnataka, Punjab, Mumbai, Railways, Bengal, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Hyderabad, Baroda, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Maharashtra. Though all the teams tried their best, only the teams like Hyderabad, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka and Mumbai eventually got into the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98.

Ranji Trophy, 1997-98, Knock out Matches: The knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 saw the participation of the top 6 teams from the Super League stage, including the likes of Hyderabad, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka and Mumbai. The teams played very well in the Super League stage of India`s premium domestic cricket tournament and then they competed with each other in the knock out matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1997-98 for the coveted championship title. All the teams gave their best efforts to do well while playing in the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final match of the tournament and tried hard to win the title. However, it was the Karnataka team that eventually became successful to win the championship title by beating the Uttar Pradesh team in the closely contested Final.
