All the 6 teams that had been playing under the South Zone in the tournament for the previous several editions took part in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, as well. The Ranji Trophy is the leading domestic cricket tournament in India and the participating teams in the South Zone of the tournament were mainly representing different states from the Southern region of India. The teams included the likes of Kerala, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu and all the teams gave their best efforts to claim the top spot in the zone. The teams also tried hard to get into the knock out level of the tournament, however, only the teams like Hyderabad and Karnataka eventually became successful to do so from the zone. The Hyderabad and Karnataka teams earned 92 and 88 points, respectively at the end of the zonal level league matches and they also advanced to the knock out level of the tournament.

The Goa and Hyderabad teams played against each other in the first of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the two teams played the match at Panaji from 03-06 November, 1991. The Hyderabad team became the winner in the match with a margin of an innings and 267 runs to earn 25 points and the Goa team also earned 2 points from the match. The teams of Goa and Kerala met with each other in the second match of the zone and the match took place at Margao from 12-15 November, 1991. The match was won by the Kerala team with a good margin of 6 wickets and the team earned 14 points from it. The Goa team earned 6 points from the match, as well. The Kerala team was a part of the third match of the South Zone also, as it played against the Tamil Nadu team at Madras from 22-25 November, 1991. The winner of the match was the Tamil Nadu team with a margin of an innings and 137 runs and the team earned 22 points from it. The earnings of the Kerala team from the match were 3 points.

The fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 was played between the teams of Karnataka and Goa and the match was held at KGF from 22-25 November, 1991. The match saw the Karnataka team earning 15 points by clinching a huge victory of 10 wickets and the Goa team also earned 3 points from the match. The next match of the zone saw the Karnataka team playing against the Kerala team at Bijapur from 29 November-02 December, 1991. The Karnataka team earned 25 points from the match by winning it with a margin of an innings and 242 runs and the Kerala team earned 2 points from the match, as well. The match between the teams of Hyderabad and Andhra was also held during the same timing from 29 November-02 December, 1991. The two teams played the match at Secunderabad and the Hyderabad team won the match by a margin of an innings and 89 runs to earn 24 points. The Andhra team also earned 3 points from the match.

The teams of Tamil Nadu and Goa played against each other in the seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was held at Madras from 29 November-02 December, 1991. The Tamil Nadu team won the match by an innings and 280 runs for earning 25 points and the Goa team also earned 2 points from the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Kerala and Hyderabad and the two teams played the match at Tellicherry from 06-09 December, 1991. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded both the Hyderabad and Kerala teams 16 points, each for the match. The Hyderabad team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Tamil Nadu team at Madras from 13-16 December, 1991. The drawn match saw the Hyderabad team earning 12 points and Tamil Nadu earning 8 points from it.

The match between the teams of Andhra and Karnataka was the tenth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was held at Vishakhapatnam from 13-16 December, 1991. The Karnataka team earned 22 points from the match by beating the Andhra team by a margin of an innings and 74 runs and the Andhra team also earned 3 points from the match. The next match of the zone was played between the teams of Andhra and Goa and the two teams played the match at Cuddapah from 19-22 December, 1991. The Andhra team won the match by 8 wickets to earn 20 points and the Goa team earned 7 points from the match, as well. The Andhra team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Kerala team at Calicut from 26-29 December, 1991. The winner of the match was the Kerala team by a margin of 6 wickets and the team earned 17 points from the match. The Andhra team also earned 7 points from the match.

The next match of the South Zone was played between the teams of Hyderabad and Karnataka and the match took place at Secunderabad from 27-30 December, 1991. The Hyderabad and Karnataka teams earned 15 and 9 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time. The Tamil Nadu and Andhra teams were involved in the next match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Tirupati from 2-5 January, 1992. The match saw the Tamil Nadu team earning 25 points for winning it with a margin of an innings and 166 runs and the Andhra team also earned 2 points from the match. The last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 saw the teams of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu playing against each other at Bhadravati from 6-9 February, 1992. The match saw a very close contest between the two teams and the Karnataka team eventually became successful to clinch a narrow victory of only 1 wicket in the match. The Karnataka team earned 17 points from the match and the Tamil Nadu team also earned 8 points from the match.
