All the 6 teams that had been playing under the South Zone in the tournament for the previous several editions took part in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, as well. The Ranji Trophy is the leading domestic cricket tournament in India and the participating teams in the South Zone of the tournament were mainly representing different states from the Southern region of India. The teams included the likes of Kerala, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu and all the teams gave their best efforts to claim the top spot in the zone. The teams also tried hard to get into the knock out level of the tournament, however, only the teams like Hyderabad and Karnataka eventually became successful to do so from the zone. The Hyderabad and Karnataka teams earned 92 and 88 points, respectively at the end of the zonal level league matches and they also advanced to the knock out level of the tournament.
The Goa and Hyderabad teams played against each other in the first of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the two teams played the match at Panaji from 03-06 November, 1991. The Hyderabad team became the winner in the match with a margin of an innings and 267 runs to earn 25 points and the Goa team also earned 2 points from the match. The teams of Goa and Kerala met with each other in the second match of the zone and the match took place at Margao from 12-15 November, 1991. The match was won by the Kerala team with a good margin of 6 wickets and the team earned 14 points from it. The Goa team earned 6 points from the match, as well. The Kerala team was a part of the third match of the South Zone also, as it played against the Tamil Nadu team at Madras from 22-25 November, 1991. The winner of the match was the Tamil Nadu team with a margin of an innings and 137 runs and the team earned 22 points from it. The earnings of the Kerala team from the match were 3 points.
The fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 was played between the teams of Karnataka and Goa and the match was held at KGF from 22-25 November, 1991. The next match of the zone saw the Karnataka team playing against the Kerala team at Bijapur from 29 November-02 December, 1991. The teams of Tamil Nadu and Goa played against each other in the seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was held at Madras from 29 November-02 December, 1991. The Tamil Nadu team won the match by an innings and 280 runs for earning 25 points and the Goa team also earned 2 points from the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Kerala and Hyderabad and the two teams played the match at Tellicherry from 06-09 December, 1991. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded both the Hyderabad and Kerala teams 16 points, each for the match. The match saw a very close contest between the two teams and the Karnataka team eventually became successful to clinch a narrow victory of only 1 wicket in the match. The Karnataka team earned 17 points from the match and the Tamil Nadu team also earned 8 points from the match.
