The West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1987-88 saw the participation of 5 teams including the likes of Gujarat, Saurashtra, Bombay, Maharashtra and Baroda. Most of the teams were representing different states from the Western region of India and they had also been participating in the tournament on a regular basis for the previous several editions. Though, all the teams tried their best to claim the top spot in the zone and they also tried hard for securing a birth in the knock out level of the tournament, only the teams like Baroda and Bombay could eventually do so from the zone. The Baroda team earned a total of 53 points and Bombay earned 46 points, at the end of the zonal level league matches.
The match between the teams of Saurashtra and Baroda was the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1987-88 and the two teams played the match at Rajkot from 22-24 November, 1987. The Baroda team played very well in the match and clinched a huge victory of 10 wickets for earning 18 points and the Saurashtra team also earned 4 points from the match. The Gujarat and Maharashtra teams played against each other in the second match of the zone and the match was held at Narmadanagar from 22-24 November, 1987. The drawn match saw the Gujarat team earning 12 points and Maharashtra earning 11 points from it. The third match of the zone was played between the teams of Baroda and Bombay and the match took place at Baroda from 19-21 December, 1987. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Bombay teams 7 and 6 points, respectively for the match.
The Maharashtra team played against the Saurashtra team in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1987-88 and the match was played at Pune from 19-21 December, 1987. The Saurashtra and Maharashtra teams earned 12 and 8 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified duration of time. The next match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Baroda and Gujarat and the clash took place at Baroda from 25-27 December, 1987. The match also remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Gujarat teams 16 and 13 points, respectively for the match. The Bombay team then played against the Saurashtra team in the next match of the zone, which was held at Bombay from 25-27 December, 1987. The Bombay and Saurashtra teams earned 14 and 4 points, respectively from the drawn match.
The Bombay team appeared in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1987-88 also and this time, it played against the Gujarat team at Valsad from 02-04 January, 1988. The winner of the match was the Bombay team with a margin of 82 runs and the team also earned 18 points from the match. The match saw the Gujarat team earning 5 points form it, as well. The match between the teams of Maharashtra and Baroda was the next match of the zone and the match took place at Pune from 02-04 January, 1988. The Maharashtra and Baroda teams earned 17 and 12 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Maharashtra team then clashed with the Bombay team in the next match of the zone, which took place at Bombay from 09-11 January, 1988. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra team earning 9 points and Baroda earning 8 points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1987-88 involved the teams like Saurashtra and Gujarat and the two teams played the match at Rajkot from 10-12 January, 1988. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Saurashtra and Gujarat teams earned 10 and 7 points, respectively from the drawn match.
