All the 5 regular teams that had been playing in the tournament for the previous several editions took part under the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1984-85, as well. The teams were selected from the Western region of India and most of them were representing different states from that region. The teams included the likes of Baroda, Saurashtra, Bombay, Gujarat and Maharashtra and all of them vied for the top spot in the zone. The main reason behind the teams` this endeavour was that the tournament organisers, BCCI would allow only the top two teams from each zone to compete in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams of Bombay and Saurashtra became the toppers in the zone with total points of 74 and 49, respectively and they also competed with the top teams form the other zones in the knock out level, for the championship title.
The Maharashtra and Bombay teams appeared in the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1984-85 and the match was held at Pune from 07-09 December, 1984. The Bombay and Maharashtra teams earned 14 and 13 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time. The second match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra and the clash took place at Ahmedabad from 07-09 December, 1984. The drawn match saw the Saurashtra and Gujarat teams earning 12 and 9 points, respectively from it. The Baroda and Maharashtra teams played against each other in the third match of the zone, which was held at Baroda from 20-22 December, 1984. The match officials awarded the Baroda and Maharashtra teams 9 and 8 points, respectively for the drawn match.
There was a clash between the teams of Bombay and Gujarat in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1984-85. The match was held at Bombay from 21-23 December, 1984 and it remained drawn during the stipulated duration. The Bombay and Gujarat teams earned 15 and 7 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Bombay team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Bombay from 08-10 January, 1985. The Bombay team earned 14 points and Baroda earned 6 points from the drawn match. The Saurashtra team then played against the Maharashtra team in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Jamnagar from 08-10 January, 1985. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra team earning 13 points and Saurashtra earning 10 points, from it.
The seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1984-85 saw a clash between the teams of Baroda and Saurashtra at Baroda from 27-29 January, 1985. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Saurashtra and Baroda teams earned 13 and 12 points from it. The Maharashtra and Gujarat teams then played against each other in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Pune from 27-29 January, 1985. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra and Gujarat teams earning 11 and 10 points, respectively from it. The match between the teams of Gujarat and Baroda was the next match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Surat from 09-11 February, 1985. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Gujarat teams 12 and 11 points, respectively for the match. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1984-85 involved the teams like Saurashtra and Bombay and the match was played at Gandhidham from 09-11 February, 1985. The Bombay team played very well in the match and clinched a victory of 6 wickets for earning 31 points from it. The Saurashtra team earned 14 points from the match, as well.
