Rangmandal is a Gujarati troupe in Ahmedabad which along with Natmandal is credited with bringing good literature on stage. This was also famous for creative theatre training, and cultivating audience tastes. Rangmandal was established in 1937 at the behest of Mama Warerkar. He can be called as the doyen of Marathi theatre. Rangmandal launched what was called the drawing-room theatre movement of the 1950s, producing three one-act plays for each regular subscribed show, and also classical drama like Sudraka's Mricchakatika, modern original Gujarati plays like K. M. Munshi's Lopamudra, and Bengali plays like Tagore's Achalayatan i.e. 'Immovable Institution'. Journalists and Gujarati theatre persons like Nirubhai Desai, Hiralal Bhagwati, Dhananjay Thaker, Arun Thakore, andjayanti Patel were involved in its activities in the beginning. It was run by a charitable trust, the Ellisbridge Arogya Samiti, which later built an improvised auditorium. Under actor Raju Patel it produced some experimental drama till the late 1970s.
