A number of 5 teams played against each other under the North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 and the teams included the likes of Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Services and Jammu & Kashmir. All the teams were coming from the Northern region of India and they were also the regular participants of the tournament. The teams took part in the zonal league matches for claiming the top spot in the zone and securing a birth in the knock out level of the tournament was also another principal aim of the teams. After the completion of the zonal level league matches, the teams like Haryana and Delhi became successful to do so from the zone. The Haryana team earned a total of 94 points and Delhi earned 90 points, at the end of the North Zone league matches.

The first of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 was played between the teams of Haryana and Services at Chandigarh from 24-26 November, 1983. The match saw the Haryana team winning by a very good margin of an innings and 100 runs and also earning 28 points from it. The Services team earned 3 points from the match, as well. The teams of Punjab and Services played against each other in the second match of the North Zone and the match was held at Chandigarh from 03-05 December, 1983. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Punjab and Services teams 5 and 4 pints, respectively for the match. The third match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Delhi and Haryana and the two teams played the match at Delhi from 04-06 December, 1983. The drawn match saw the Delhi and Haryana teams earning 9 and 6 points, respectively from it.

The clash between the teams of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir took place in the fourth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 at Amritsar from 08-10 December, 1983. The Punjab team played very well in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 163 runs for earning 32 points from the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Delhi and Services and the match took place at Delhi from 11-13 December, 1983. The winner of the match was the Delhi team with a huge margin of 9 wickets and the match saw the Delhi team and Services teams earning 25 and 6 points, respectively from it. The Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir teams then clashed with each other in the next match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Rohtak from 13-15 December, 1983. The Haryana team earned 30 points from the match, by winning it with a margin of an innings and 66 runs and the Jammu & Kashmir team earned 3 points from the match, as well.

The Jammu & Kashmir team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Services team at Delhi from 17-19 December, 1983. There was no winner in the match and the Services and Jammu & Kashmir teams earned 14 and 7 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Punjab and Delhi teams locked their horns together in the eighth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 and the match took place at Amritsar from 18-20 December, 1983. The Delhi team earned 24 points from the match, by winning it with a huge margin of 8 wickets and the Punjab team earned 6 points from the match, as well. The Delhi team then played against the Jammu & Kashmir team in the next match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Delhi from 22-24 December, 1983. The Delhi team became the winner of the match also and this time, it won the match with a wonderful margin of an innings and 180 runs. The Delhi team earned 32 points from the match and the Jammu & Kashmir team also earned 4 points from it. The last of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 involved the teams like Haryana and Punjab and the match was organised at Faridabad from 04-06 January, 1984. The match saw the Haryana team earning 30 points from it, by clinching a victory of an innings and 24 runs and the Punjab team also earned 1 point from the match.
