All the regular 5 teams that had been playing in the tournament for the previous several editions took part under the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83, as well. The teams included the likes of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Saurashtra, Baroda and Bombay and all the teams were representing different states from the Western region of India. The teams played against each other in the zonal matches with an aim to get into the knock out level of the tournament, by becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. However, the teams like Baroda and Bombay eventually became successful to do so from the zone, as they earned total points of 27 and 22, respectively after the completion of the zonal level league matches.
There was a clash between the teams of Baroda and Gujarat in the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83. The two teams played the match at Baroda from 20-22 November, 1982 and the Baroda team won the match with a margin of an innings and 44 runs. The Baroda team earned the entire 9 points from the match, as well. The Bombay and Maharashtra teams appeared in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Kolhapur from 20-22 November, 1982. The drawn match earned the Bombay and Maharashtra teams 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The Maharashtra team appeared in the third match of the West Zone also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Baroda from 27-29 November, 1982. The match between the teams of Saurashtra and Gujarat was the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 and the match took place at Surat from 28-30 November, 1982. The Saurashtra team earned the entire 9 points, by winning the closely contested match with a narrow margin of only 3 wickets. The Bombay team then played against the Baroda team in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Thane from 04-06 December, 1982. The Baroda and Bombay teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Maharashtra and Saurashtra teams then clashed with each other in the next match of the zone that was held at Surendranagar from 04-06 December, 1982. The winner of the match was the Maharashtra team with a margin of 5 wickets and the match saw the team earning 8 valuable points, as well.
The Saurashtra team appeared in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Baroda from 11-13 December, 1982. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Saurashtra teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The Bombay and Gujarat teams locked their horns together in the next match of the zone that was held at Bombay from 11-13 December, 1982. Playing very well in the match, the Bombay team clinched a victory of an innings and 66 runs for earning the full 9 points from it. The Bombay team then played against the Saurashtra team in the next match of the zone at Jamnagar from 18-20 December, 1982. The drawn match saw the Bombay team earning 5 points and Saurashtra earning 3 points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 saw a clash between the teams of Maharashtra and Gujarat at Nasik from 18-20 December, 1982. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Maharashtra and Gujarat teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match.
