There were a number of 24 teams participated in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83, all coming from different parts of India. The BCCI selected teams, were mainly representing different states of India in the tournament and they played against each other first in the zonal level and then in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams included the likes of Andhra, Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Bihar, Bombay, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Railways, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Services, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha.
Ranji Trophy 1982-83, Central Zone League Matches: The teams that played against each other under the Central Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 included the likes of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Railways, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha. All the teams hailed from the Central region of India and they were also the regular participants of the tournament. The teams gave their best efforts to become one of the top teams in the zone, as only the toppers of every zone were allowed to take part in the knock out level matches of the tournament. The teams like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan became the toppers in the zone with 25 and 23 points, respectively, and the teams competed with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level for the championship title.
Ranji Trophy 1982-83, Central Zone League Matches East Zone League Matches: The East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 saw the participation of a number of 4 teams, all the regular ones coming from the Eastern region of India. The teams included the likes of Bihar, Orissa, Assam and Bengal and they played against each other in the zonal level with a view to claim the top spot in the zone. Advancing to the knock out level of the tournament was also another main aim of the teams, however, only the teams like Orissa and Bengal could achieve this aim. The Orissa team played wonderfully in the zonal level and entered into the knock out level for the first time with total 15 points, at the end of the zonal level matches. The Bengal team earned 14 points from the league matches and the two teams competed against the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level, for the championship title.
Ranji Trophy 1982-83, Central Zone League Matches North Zone League Matches: The North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 was comprised of 5 teams that were representing the Northern region of India in the tournament. The teams included the likes of Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir and Services and they tried their best to become one of the top two teams in the zone. The main reason behind their this endeavour was that the BCCI allowed only the top two teams from every zone to enter into the knock out level of the tournament. The teams like Haryana and Delhi were the toppers in the North Zone and they earned 25 and 24 points, respectively after the completion of the zonal level league matches.
Ranji Trophy 1982-83, Central Zone League Matches South Zone League Matches: A number of 5 teams participated under the South Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 and the teams were selected by the BCCI from the Southern region of India. All the teams had been playing in the tournament for the previous several editions and they included the likes of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Hyderabad, Andhra and Kerala. Though all the teams gave their best efforts to claim the top spot in the zone, the teams like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu eventually became the toppers in the zone. Both the teams earned a total of 26 points, at the end of the zonal level league matches and they competed against the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level of the tournament, for the championship title.
Ranji Trophy 1982-83, Central Zone League Matches West Zone League Matches: All the regular 5 teams that had been playing in the tournament for the previous several editions took part under the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83, as well. The teams included the likes of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Saurashtra, Baroda and Bombay and all the teams were representing different states from the Western region of India. The teams played against each other in the zonal matches with an aim to get into the knock out level of the tournament, by becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. However, the teams like Baroda and Bombay eventually became successful to do so from the zone, as they earned total points of 27 and 22, respectively after the completion of the zonal level league matches.
Ranji Trophy 1982-83, Central Zone League Matches Knock out Matches: The ten teams that were promoted to the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 by the tournament organisers, BCCI were mainly the top teams from the five zones. The teams included the likes of Bengal, Bombay, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Baroda, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Karnataka and Orissa and they competed with each other in the knock out matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 for the championship title. The teams played against each other in the Pre-Quarter-Finals, Quarterfinals, Semi-Finals and Final match of the tournament. However, the Karnataka team eventually became the champion of the tournament, for yet another time.
