The match between the teams of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir was the first of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1979-80 and the match took place at Amritsar from 01-03 November, 1979. The Punjab team won the match quite comprehensively with a very good margin of an innings and 124 runs and earned 8 valuable points from it, as well. The second match of the zone involved the teams like Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana and the two teams played the match at Bhiwani from 05-07 November, 1979. The clash between the teams of Delhi and Punjab took place in the fifth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1979-80 and the match was held at Patiala from 13-15 November, 1979. The drawn match saw the Delhi team earning 5 points and Punjab earning 3 points from it. The Delhi team then played against the Services team in the next match of the zone at Delhi from 11-13 December, 1979. The Delhi team showed a very good performance in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 32 runs for earning the entire 9 points from the match.
There was a clash between the teams of Punjab and Haryana in the seventh of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1979-80 and the two teams played the match at Chandigarh from 11-13 December, 1979. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and it saw the Haryana and Punjab teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The Haryana team then played against the Services team in the next match at Rohtak from 15-17 December, 1979 and the match also remained drawn during the stipulated period of time. The match officials awarded the Haryana and Services teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the drawn match. The match between the teams of Delhi and Haryana was the next match of the zone and it was played at Delhi from 27-29 December, 1979. Playing very well in the match, the Delhi team clinched a victory of 8 wickets and earning 8 valuable points. The last of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1979-80 saw a battle between the teams of Punjab and Services at Chandigarh from 27-29 December, 1979. The drawn match saw the Services team earning 5 points and Punjab earning 3 points from it.
