The North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1978-79 was comprised of a number of 5 teams, all the regular participants of the tournament. The teams were coming from the Northern region of India and they included the likes of Delhi, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana and Services. The teams played against each other in the zonal level first and tried their best to become one of the top two teams in the zone and also to secure a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. However, the teams like Delhi and Haryana eventually become successful to do so from the zone and they competed with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level for the championship trophy.
The North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 19978-79 started with the match between the teams of Jammu & Kashmir and Services and the match was held at Udhampur from 04-06 September, 1978. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and it saw the Services team earning 5 points and Jammu & Kashmir earning 3 points from it. The second match of the zone was played between the teams of Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab and the match took place at Srinagar from 06-08 October, 1978. The Punjab team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 51 runs for earning the entire 9 points from the match. The Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir teams met with each other in the third match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Srinagar from 11-13 October, 1978. The match saw the Haryana team playing very well and winning it by a huge margin of an innings and 98 runs. The Haryana team earned the full 9 points from the match, as well.
The fourth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1978-79 saw a clash between the teams of Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir and the two teams played the match at Jammu from 08-10 November, 1978. The Delhi team showed a very good performance in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 111 runs to earn the entire 9 points from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Services and Haryana and the match was held at Delhi from 26-28 November, 1978. The Haryana team played well in this match also and beat the Services team by a margin of 116 runs for earning 8 valuable points from it. The Punjab team then played against the Delhi team in the next match of the zone at Delhi from 26-28 November, 1978. The drawn match saw the Delhi team earning 5 points and Punjab earning 3 points from it.
The Punjab team appeared in the seventh of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1978-79 also and this time, it played against the Services team at Delhi from 30 November-02 December, 1978. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Punjab and Services teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The next match saw a clash between the teams of Delhi and Services at Delhi from 04-06 December, 1978. The winner of the match was the Delhi team with a huge margin of an innings and 38 runs and the team earned the entire 9 points from the match, as well. The Delhi team then clashed with the Haryana team in the next match of the zone at Rohtak from 09-11 December, 1978. The Delhi team played well in this match also and clinched a huge victory of 10 wickets for earning 8 valuable points from it. The last of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1978-79 was played between the teams of Punjab and Haryana and the match was held at Amritsar from 23-25 December, 1978. The match saw the Haryana team winning by a very good margin of an innings and 14 runs and also earning 8 valuable points from it.
