There were a number of 5 teams played against each other in the North Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78. The teams were representing different states from the Northern region of India and they included the likes of Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir and the Services. All the teams played well in the zonal level and vied for a birth in the knock out level of the tournament by getting into the top position in the zone. However, only the teams of Delhi and Punjab could do so from the zone and they also secured a birth in the knock out level of the tournament.
The Punjab and Services teams clashed with each other in the first of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78 and the teams played the match at Chandigarh from 12-14 November, 1977. The Punjab team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won the match by a huge margin of 8 wickets and also earned 8 points from it. The match between the teams of Punjab and Delhi was the second match of the zone and it took place at Amritsar from 18-20 November, 1977. The Delhi team played very well in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 51 runs for earning 8 points from it. The Punjab team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Haryana team at Rohtak from 25-27 November, 1977. The Punjab team came back nicely from its defeat in the previous match and won this match convincingly by 33 runs. The Punjab team earned 8 points from the match, as well.
There was a clash between the teams of Services and Delhi in the fourth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78 and the clash took place at Delhi from 25-27 November, 1977. The Delhi team crushed the Services team by a huge margin of 10 wickets and also earned 8 points from the match, quite comfortably. The Services team then clashed with the Haryana team in the next match of the zone at Rohtak from 30 November-02 December, 1977. The match saw the Haryana team winning by a margin of 260 runs and also earning 8 points from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir and the match was held at Jullundur from 01-03 December, 1977. Playing well in the match, the Punjab team earned 8 points from the match by winning with a margin of an innings and 52 runs.
The clash between the teams of Haryana and Delhi took place in the next match of the North Zone and the match was held at Delhi from 05-07 December, 1977. The drawn match saw the Delhi team earning 5 points and Haryana earning 3 points from it. The Jammu & Kashmir team then played against the Services team in the next match at Delhi from 05-07 December, 1977. The Services team earned 8 points from the match by winning it with a margin of 10 wickets. The Haryana team appeared in the ninth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78 against the Jammu & Kashmir team at Rai from 09-11 December, 1977. The Haryana team won the match by a very good margin of an innings and 214 runs and earned 8 points from the match, as well. The last of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78 was played between the teams of Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir at Delhi from 14-16 December, 1977. The Delhi team won the match by an innings and 159 runs and also earned the entire 9 points from it.
