Chintamani Govind Pendse or 'mama' was a prominent star in Marathi theatre. He was born in Sangli in 1906. He received only basic education. After stints in Aundhkars Samarth Natak Mandali and the Ramesh Natak Mandali during the 1920s and 1930s, he joined the Lalitkaladarsha Natak Mandali in 1942, where his acting in Warerkars Satteche gulam won tremendous appreciation. Disciplined and versatile, he shown in mythological, historical, as well as social vehicles like Deval's Samshay kallol and Sharada or Khadilkar's Sawai Madhavrao wancha mrityu and Bhaubandaki. He memorably acted Nana Phadnavis in Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh's award-winning production of Bhaubandaki in 1944. Although he underwent five surgeries between 1945 and 1957, he continued to perform for Rangnekar's Natyaniketan and several other companies in later life. He acted in more than 100 productions. He also directed some plays, contributed to the experimental theatre, and briefly acted in films.
