The West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77 saw the participation of a number of 5 teams, all the regular ones coming from the Western region of India. The teams included the likes of Gujarat, Baroda, Bombay, Maharashtra and Saurashtra and they were representing different states of Western India. The teams first competed with each other in the zonal level for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone and then the top two teams went on to play in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams like Bombay and Baroda became successful to secure a place in the knock out level from the West Zone. The two toppers played against the toppers of the other zones in the knock out level, for the championship title.
The match between the teams of Gujarat and Baroda was the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77 and the match was held at Nadiad from 25-27 September, 1976. The match remained drawn during the stipulated period of time and the match officials decided to award the Baroda and Gujarat teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The second match of the West Zone involved the teams like Maharashtra and Gujarat and the match took place at Malinagar from 02-04 October, 1976. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra and Gujarat teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The teams of Saurashtra and Bombay clashed with each other in the third match of the zone and the match was played at Surendranagar from 02-04 October, 1976. The Bombay team got a good start in the tournament, as it earned 8 points from the match by winning it with a margin of 163 runs.
There was a battle between the teams of Bombay and Gujarat in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77. The match was held at Bombay from 09-11 October, 1976 and none of teams could get any benefit from the match, as it remained drawn during the stipulated duration of time. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Saurashtra and Maharashtra and the match took place at Rajkot from 04-06 December, 1976. The drawn match saw the Saurashtra team earning 5 points and Maharashtra earning 3 points from it. The Bombay team then appeared in the next match of the zone against the Baroda team at Bombay from 04-06 December, 1976. It was another drawn match that saw the Bombay and Baroda teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it.
The Baroda team appeared in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77 also and this time, it played against the Maharashtra team at Baroda from 11-13 December, 1976. The Maharashtra and Baroda teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the stipulated period of time. The match between the teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra was also held during the same timing from 11-13 December, 1976 and it was held at Ahmedabad. The winner of the match was the Saurashtra team with a margin of 112 runs and it earned 8 points from the match, as well. The Saurashtra team then played against the Baroda team in the next match at Baroda from 25-27 December, 1976. The drawn match saw the Baroda and Saurashtra team earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77 was played between the teams of Maharashtra and Bombay at Pune from 25-27 December, 1976. The Bombay and Maharashtra teams earned 6 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
