The North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77 saw a huge competition between the 5 teams of Delhi, Services, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana. All the teams were from the Northern region of India and they tried their best to become one of the top two teams in the zone. The main reason behind their this endeavour was to get a chance for competing with the top two teams of the other zones in the knock out level of the tournament and vying for the championship title. The teams like Delhi and Haryana eventually became successful to do so from the North Zone.
The North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77 started with the match between the teams of Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi at Srinagar from 17-18 September, 1976. The Delhi team earned 8 valuable points from the match by defeating its opponents by an innings and 32 runs and also got a very good start in the tournament. The next match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Services and Jammu & Kashmir and the match was held at Srinagar from 21-23 September, 1976. The Services team showed a very good performance in the match and clinched a victory of 81 runs for earning 9 points from it. The match between the teams of Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir was the next one in the North Zone and the match took place at Jammu from 03-04 October, 1976. The Haryana team defeated the Jammu & Kashmir team by a huge margin of an innings and 76 runs and earned 8 valuable points from the match.
The Jammu & Kashmir team appeared in the fourth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77 also and this time, it played against the Punjab team at Jammu from 08-09 October, 1976. Playing very well in the match, the Punjab team clinched a victory of 208 runs and also earned 8 valuable points from it. The next match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Haryana and Delhi at Rai from 09-11 October, 1976 and the match saw the Delhi team winning by a margin of an innings and 23 runs. The match also saw the Delhi team earning 8 points from it.
The Delhi team then played against the Punjab team in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Delhi from 29-31 October, 1976. The drawn match saw the Delhi team earning 5 points and Punjab earning 3 points from it. The Delhi team appeared in the seventh of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77 as well, and this time, its opponent was the Services team. The match took place at Delhi from 05-07 December, 1976 and it saw the Delhi team winning by 10 wickets for earning 8 valuable points from it. The last of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1976-77 was played between the teams of Punjab and Haryana at Baradari from 24-26 December, 1976. The Haryana team played very well in the match and got a huge win of 105 runs to earn 8 valuable points from the match.
