There was a number of 5 teams participated under the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75 and all the teams were coming from the Western region of India. The participating teams in the West Zone included the likes of Bombay, Baroda, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Saurashtra and all of then had the one and only aim of getting a chance into the knock out level of the tournament. As only the top two teams from a zone was allowed to compete in the knock out level, the teams gave their best efforts to become the toppers in the zone. However, only the Bombay and Maharashtra teams eventually became successful to do so from the West Zone.
The Saurashtra and Gujarat teams played against each other in the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75 and the match was held at Vidyanagar from 14-16 September 1974. The Gujarat team won the match by a good margin of 6 wickets and also earned the entire 9 points from it. The teams of Bombay and Saurashtra clashed with each other in the second match of the West Zone and the match took place at Porbandar from 21-23 September 1974. The drawn match saw the Bombay and Saurashtra teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Maharashtra and Gujarat and the two teams played the match at Poona from 21-23 September 1974. The match also went on to be drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded both the Gujarat and Maharashtra teams 5 points each for the match.
There was a clash between the teams of Gujarat and Baroda in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75. The match that was held at Bulsar from 27-29 September, 1974 remained drawn during its specified duration and The Baroda and Gujarat teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The next match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Maharashtra and Saurashtra at Jamnagar from 27-29 September, 1974. The Maharashtra and Saurashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Bombay and Baroda teams then clashed with each other in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Bombay from 17-19 November, 1974. The match saw the Bombay team winning by a margin of an innings and 96 runs and also earning 8 valuable points from it.
The seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75 was played between the teams of Maharashtra and Bombay and the match took place at Nasik from 06-08 December, 1974. As it remained drawn during the stipulated period of time, the Bombay and Maharashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match. The next match of the zone was held between the teams of Baroda and Saurashtra at Baroda from 07-09 December, 1974. This match also went on to be drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Saurashtra teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The Baroda team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Maharashtra team at Baroda from 21-23 December, 1974. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 5 points and Maharashtra earning 3 points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75 was played between the teams of Gujarat and Bombay at Bombay from 23-25 December, 1974. The Bombay team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 8 runs for earning 8 valuable points from it.
