The 5 teams that took part under the South Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75 included the likes of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Hyderabad and Kerala. All the teams were representing the Southern region of India in the tournament and they competed in the zonal level for the becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. The teams also competed with each other for securing a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. However, the champion of the previous edition, Karnataka and Hyderabad team eventually became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament from the South Zone.
The teams of Kerala and Tamil Nadu played against each other in the first of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75 and the match was played at Trivandrum from 09-10 November, 1974. The Tamil Nadu team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won this match by a margin of 7 wickets and also earned the full 9 points from it. The second match of the South Zone was played between the teams of Karnataka and Andhra at Shimoga from 09-11 November, 1974. The Karnataka team played very well in the match and earned 8 points from it, by winning with a margin of 79 runs. There was a clash between the teams of Andhra and Hyderabad in the third match of the South Zone and the match was held at Vijayawada from 30 November-02 December 1974. The match saw the Hyderabad team winning by a good margin of 115 runs and also earning the entire 9 points from it.
The match between the teams of Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu was the fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75 and the two teams met with each other at Hyderabad from 06-08 December, 1974. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and it saw the Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu teams earning 6 and 3 points, respectively from it. The Kerala and Karnataka teams then clashed with each other in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Tellicherry from 06-08 December, 1974. The winner of the match was the Karnataka team with a huge margin of 290 runs and the team earned the full 9 points from the match, as well. The next match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Andhra and Kerala at Guntur from 14-16 December, 1974 and the Andhra team won by a margin of 22 runs for earning 8 points from the match.
There was a clash between the teams of Hyderabad and Kerala in the seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75 and the match was held at Nizamabad from 18-20 December, 1974. Playing well in the match, the Hyderabad team beat the Kerala team by a margin of 9 wickets and also earned the entire 0 points from the match. The next match of the zone was held at Madras from 20-22 December, 1974 between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The Tamil Nadu and Karnataka teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Tamil Nadu team appeared in the next match of the South Zone also and this time, it played against the Andhra team Salem from 04-06 January, 1975. The match saw a very close contest between the two teams and the Andhra team eventually clinched a very narrow victory of only 1 run for earning 8 valuable points from the match. The last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1974-75 saw the teams of Karnataka and Hyderabad playing against each other at Bangalore from 05-07 January, 1975. The Karnataka and Hyderabad teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
