The Central Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1973-74 saw the participation of all the regular four teams included the likes of Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The teams were representing the Central region of India and they played against each other for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. Getting a promotion to the knock out level of the tournament was also another principal aim of the teams. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan team 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The second match of the zone was played between the teams of Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh at Nagpur from 16-18 December 1973. This match also went on to be drawn after the specified period of time and the Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match.
The third of the Central Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1973-74 involved the teams like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The match that was held at Agra from 22-24 December 1973 saw the Madhya Pradesh team winning by 3 wickets, after competing very closely with its opponents. The Madhya Pradesh team earned 8 valuable points from the match, as well. The next match of the zone was played between the teams of Rajasthan and Vidarbha at Jaipur from 23-25 December 1973. The drawn match saw the Vidarbha team earning 5 points and Rajasthan earning 3 points from it.
The match between the teams of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh was the fifth of the Central Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1973-74 and the match took place at Jaipur from 28-30 December 1973. The Rajasthan team played very well in the match and clinched a victory of 66 runs to earn 8 valuable points from it. The last match of the Central Zone saw a clash between the teams of Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha at Agra from 29-31 December 1973 and the match was won by the Uttar Pradesh team with a margin of an innings and 11 runs. The Uttar Pradesh team also earned 8 valuable points from the match.
