The South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1966-67 was comprised of a number of 5 teams, including the likes of Hyderabad, Madras, Andhra, Kerala and Mysore. All the teams were coming from the Southern region of India and they played against each other for becoming one of the top two teams in the Zone. They also tried their best to get an entry into the knock out level of the tournament, however, only the teams like Hyderabad and Mysore could do so. They went on to compete with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level of the tournament.
The teams of Hyderabad and Madras appeared in the first of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1966-67 and the match was held at Hyderabad from 01-03 September, 1966. The Madras team played well in the match and clinched a hardly earned victory of 14 runs to earn 9 points from the match and also to get a good start in the tournament. The second match of the South zone saw a battle between the teams of Mysore and Andhra at Bangalore from 01-03 September, 1966. The winner of the match was the Mysore team with a huge margin of an innings and 87 runs and the win helped the team to earn 9 points from the match. The Mysore team appeared in the third match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Hyderabad team at Bangalore from 05-07 November, 1966. The team played very well in this match also and got a huge victory of 8 wickets to earn 9 points from it.
The fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1966-67 involved the teams of Kerala and Madras and the two teams played the match at Trivandrum from 11-13 November, 1966. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials decided to award the Madras and Kerala teams 5 and 4 points, respectively for the match. The Hyderabad and Andhra teams clashed with each other during the same timing of 11-13 November, 1966, in the next match at Anantapur. The drawn match saw the Hyderabad team earning 5 points and Andhra earning 4 points from it. The Andhra team appeared in the next match of the zone against the Kerala team and the venue of the match was Vijayawada. The match was held from 19-21 November, 1966 and the Kerala and Andhra teams earned 5 and 4 points, respectively from the drawn match.
The match between the teams of Hyderabad and Kerala that was held at Sirpur from 24-26 November, 1966, was the seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1966-67. This was another drawn match of the zone and the match officials awarded the Kerala and Hyderabad teams 5 and 4 points, respectively for the match. The Madras and Andhra teams then clashed with each other at Salem from 02-04 December, 1966. The Madras team played wonderfully in the match and earned 9 points by winning it with a huge margin of 8 wickets. The next match of the South Zone saw a clash between the teams of Kerala and Mysore at Calicut from 03-04 December, 1966, where the Mysore team won by a margin of 8 wickets. The two powerful teams of the South Zone, Madras and Mysore locked their horns together in the last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1966-67 and the match was held at Madras from 21-23 January, 1967. The Mysore team played nicely in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 1 run to earn the entire 9 points from the match.
