The West Zone saw a tough competition between 5 teams that included the likes of Saurashtra, Maharashtra, Bombay, Baroda and Gujarat. The teams, coming from the western region of India, competed with each other first in the zonal stage and the top two of them got a promotion into the knock out level of the tournament. The Bombay and Baroda were the two teams that became successful to enter into the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1962-63 from the West Zone.
The teams of Saurashtra and Maharashtra clashed with each other in the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1962-63. The match was held at Bhavanagar from 20-22 October, 1962 and the match saw the Saurashtra team winning by a very good margin of 9 wickets and earning 9 points from the match. The second match saw a battle between the teams of Gujarat and Baroda at Surat from 20-22 October, 1962. The Baroda team got a good start in the tournament, as it won the match by 10 wickets and earned the total 9 points. The next match involved the teams of Saurashtra and Bombay and the match took place at Rajkot from 11-13 November, 1962. The Bombay team played the match like the real champions and earned 9 points from it, by winning by 10 wickets.
The fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1962-63 was played between the teams of Bombay and Baroda at Bombay from 18-20 November, 1962, where the Bombay team won by an innings and 46 runs. The Bombay team also earned 10 points from it. The next match saw a battle between the teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra at Anand from 24-26 November, 1962. Though the match was drawn during the stipulated duration, the match officials awarded 10 points to the Saurashtra team for the match. The Saurashtra team appeared in the next match also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Baroda from 30 November-02 December, 1962. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 7 points and the Saurashtra team earning 3 points from it. Then, the teams of Gujarat and Maharashtra met with each other at Aurangabad from 01-03 December, 1962 and this was also another drawn one. The match officials awarded the Maharashtra and Gujarat teams 7 and 3 points, respectively for the match.
The teams of Bombay and Gujarat were involved in the eighth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1962-63 and they played the match at Bombay from 07-09 December, 1962. The Bombay team won the match with a good margin of an innings and 40 runs and earned 11 points from it. The next match saw a battle between the teams of Baroda and Maharashtra at Nasik from 08-10 December, 1962. As the match was drawn, the Baroda team won 6 points and Maharashtra won 3 points from the match. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1962-63 involved the teams of Bombay and Maharashtra and the two teams played against each other at Poona from 15-17 December, 1962. Though the match was drawn, the Bombay team won 8 points from it and the Maharashtra team got 3 points from the match.
