The 6 teams that played under the South Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1962-63 included the teams like Kerala, Madras, Hyderabad, Mysore and Andhra. All the teams were coming from the Southern part of India and they competed with each other for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. However, the Madras and Hyderabad teams became successful to get into the knock out level of the tournament from the South Zone.
The first of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1962-63 saw a clash between the teams of Kerala and Madras at Cochin from 24-25 November, 1962. Madras played nicely in the match and got a huge victory of an innings and 145 runs to earn the entire 11 points from it. The second match of the zone involved the teams of Mysore and Andhra and the match took place at Bangalore from 24-26 November, 1962. The Mysore team showed a good performance in the match and won it by a huge margin of 191 runs to earn the full 11 points. The teams of Hyderabad and Madras then clashed with each other in the next match at Hyderabad from 08-10 December, 1962. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded 2 points to each of the teams for the match.
The Andhra and Kerala teams clashed with each other in the fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1962-63 and the match was held at Guntur from 08-10 December, 1962. The drawn match saw the Andhra team earning 6 points and Kerala team earning 3 points from it. In the next match of the zone, there was a clash between the teams of Hyderabad and Kerala at Kothagudium from 14-15 December, 1962. The match saw the Hyderabad team winning by a huge margin of 304 runs and earning 11 points from the match. The sixth match of the South Zone saw a battle between the two most powerful teams of the zone, Madras and Mysore at Madras from 15-17 December, 1962. The match was won by the Madras team with a good margin of 152 runs to earn 9 points from it.
The next match of the South Zone involved the teams of Mysore and Hyderabad and the match was held at Bangalore from 22-24 December, 1962. The Hyderabad team earned the full 11 points from the match by winning it with a margin of 6 wickets. The Hyderabad team appeared in the next match as well, and this time, it played against the Andhra team at Anantapur from 28-29 December, 1962. The Hyderabad team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 122 runs for earning 11 points from the match. The next match saw a battle between the teams of Madras and Andhra at Madras from 05-06 January, 1963, where Madras won by 9 wickets. The Madras team earned 10 points from the match, as well. The last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1962-63 involved the teams of Kerala and Mysore and the match took place at Trivandrum from 05-07 January, 1963. The Mysore team won the match by 175 runs and earned 9 valuable points from it.
