There were a number of 5 teams played against each other in the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61. All the teams were coming from the Western part of India and the teams included the likes of Baroda, Bombay, Maharashtra, Saurashtra and Gujarat. Though all the teams tried very hard to get an entry into the knock out level, the teams of Bombay and Baroda became successful to do so from the zone.
The clash of the teams under the West Zone started from 1st September, 1960. The first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 was played between the teams of Baroda and Maharashtra at Baroda from 01-03 September, 1960. The match was drawn during its stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Maharashtra teams 6 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The second match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Bombay and Gujarat and the match was held at Bombay from 02-04 October, 1960. The Bombay team showed its class in the match and won it with a huge margin of an innings and 187 runs to earn the entire 9 points from it. The teams of Saurashtra and Maharashtra clashed with each other in the next match at Porbander from 07-08 October, 1960. The Maharashtra team played very well in the match and earned 9 points, by winning it with a huge margin of 10 wickets.
The fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 involved the teams of Bombay and Baroda and the match was played at Bombay from 07-09 October, 1960. The match officials awarded both the teams of Bombay and Baroda 2 points each, as the match was drawn during its stipulated duration. In the next match of the zone, the teams of Gujarat and Baroda played against each other at Atul from 14-16 October, 1960. The Baroda team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 125 runs to earn the full 9 points from the match. The teams of Maharashtra and Bombay played against each other in the sixth league match of the zone and the match took place at Poona from 15-17 October, 1960. The drawn match saw the Bombay team earning 6 points and Maharashtra earning 3 points from it.
The teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra then met with each other in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 that was held at Surat from 01-03 November, 1960. The match saw the Gujarat team winning by a very good margin of 293 runs and also earning 8 valuable points. The Saurashtra team then played against the Bombay team in the next match at Rajkot from 12-14 November, 1960. The unstoppable Bombay team clinched a huge victory of an innings and 155 runs in the match and also earned the entire 9 points from it. The Saurashtra team was a part of the next match also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Baroda from 18-19 November, 1960. The Baroda team won the match by an innings and 35 runs and also earned 5 points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 saw a clash between the teams of Gujarat and Maharashtra at Jalagaon from 24-26 December, 1960. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra team earning 6 points and Gujarat earning 3 points from it.
