The Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 saw the participation of a number of 24 teams from all over India and the BCCI divided the teams in five different zones. The teams competed with each other first in the zonal level and then in the knock out and vied for the trophy. The Northern Punjab was the only newcomer team in this edition of the tournament and the teams that competed in the tournament included the likes of Andhra, Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Bihar, Bombay, Delhi, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Madras, Mysore, Northern Punjab, Orissa, Railways, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Southern Punjab, Services, Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha. All these teams played under the zones of Central Zone, East Zone, North Zone, South Zone and the West Zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1960-61, Central Zone League Matches: The Central Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 was comprised of a number of 4 teams, including the likes of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and the Vidarbha team. The teams competed once with each other in the zonal stage and they also showed some wonderful cricketing performances during their league campaign. Though all of them tried their best to get into the knock out level, only the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh teams became successful to do so from the Central Zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1960-61, East Zone League Matches: The teams of Bengal, Assam, Bihar and Orissa comprised the East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61. All the teams were coming from the Eastern zone of India, according to the rules and regulations of the tournament and they fought hard with each other for becoming one of the two top teams of the zone. However, the teams of Bengal and Bihar proved them to be better than all the other teams in the zone and they also entered into the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, from the East Zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1960-61, North Zone League Matches: The North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 saw the tough competition between 6 teams that included the likes of Delhi, Services, Railways, Northern Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and the Southern Punjab. All the teams tried their best to become one of the top two teams of the Zone, however, only the Delhi and Services teams became successful to get into the knock out level of the tournament from the zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1960-61, South Zone League Matches: The teams that played under the South Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 included the likes of Mysore, Hyderabad, Kerala, Madras and Andhra. All the teams were from the Southern region of India and the five teams fought hard against each other for becoming one of the top two teams of the zone. However, the Mysore and Madras were the two teams that entered into the knock out level of the tournament.

Ranji Trophy, 1960-61, West Zone League Matches: There were a number of 5 teams played against each other in the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61. All the teams were coming from the Western part of India and the teams included the likes of Baroda, Bombay, Maharashtra, Saurashtra and Gujarat. Though all the teams tried very hard to get an entry into the knock out level, the teams of Bombay and Baroda became successful to do so from the zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1960-61, Knock out Matches: The knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 saw the participation of a number of ten teams from the five zones. The top two teams of every zone got the chance to play the knock out matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 and to compete for the championship title. The teams like Bengal, Delhi, Bombay, Rajasthan and Madras were the most important teams in the knock out level and the teams tried hard to get the title.
