The East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61 started with the match between the teams of Bihar and Orissa at Jamshedpur from 10-12 December, 1960. Though the Orissa team played very well in the match, it could not prevent the Bihar team from getting a narrow win of 3 wickets. The Bihar team also earned 8 valuable points from the match. The next match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Assam and Bengal and the match was held at Guwahati from 10-12 December, 1960. The Bengal team won extraordinarily in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 63 runs to earn the entire 9 points from the match.
The Bengal team was involved in the third match of the East Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61, as well and the match took place at Calcutta from 16-18 December, 1960. Bengal continued its wonderful form in this match also and won it by a huge margin of an innings and 81 runs. The Bengal team earned 9 points from the match, as well. The next match of the zone featured the teams of Orissa and Assam and the match was held at Guwahati from 07-09 January, 1961. The drawn match saw the Orissa team earning 5 points and the Assam team earning 3 points from it.
The best two teams of the East Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61, Bengal and Bihar then clashed with each other in the fifth match of the zone. The match was held at Calcutta from 07-09 January, 1961 and it was drawn during the specified duration. However, the match officials awarded the full 9 points to the Bengal from the match. The last of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1960-61, involved the teams of Assam and Bihar and the match was held at Guwahati from 14-16 January, 1961. This was also a drawn match and the Assam and Bihar teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from it.
