The zonal system was first introduced in this edition of the Ranji Trophy.

The Ranji Trophy, 1957-58 saw the introduction of the zonal system in the tournament for the first time, as the tournament organisers decided to divide the teams into five different zones. The zones were named as the Central Zone, the East Zone, the North Zone, the South Zone and the West Zone. There were a number of 21 teams competed with each other in the tournament and the teams like Kerala and Vidarbha were participating for the first time. The names of the participating teams in the tournament included the likes of Andhra, Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Bihar, Bombay, Delhi, Eastern Punjab, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Madras, Mysore, Orissa, Patiala, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Services, Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha.

Ranji Trophy Central Zone League Matches: The zonal system was introduced for the first time in the Ranji Trophy, 1957-58 and the Central Zone was one of the five zones of the tournament. The Zone mainly comprised the teams from the Central India. The teams like Vidarbha, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan were the teams that competed with each other under the Central Zone.

Ranji Trophy East Zone League Matches: The teams from the Eastern region of India comprised the East Zone of the Ranji Trophy. 1957-58. The teams that competed with each other from this Zone included the likes of Assam, Orissa, Bengal and Bihar. The teams of Bengal and Bihar were the most powerful amongst them and they went on to the Knock out level from the East Zone.

Ranji Trophy North Zone League Matches: In the North Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1957-58, there were a number of 4 teams included by the organisers. The teams were the Services, Delhi, Patiala and Eastern Punjab and all the teams were mainly coming from the Northern part of India.

Ranji Trophy South Zone League Matches: Just like the other Zones in the Ranji Trophy, 1957-58, the South Zone was also made of the teams that hail from the Southern part of India. There were 5 teams in this Zone and the teams included the likes of Madras, Kerala, Hyderabad, Mysore and Andhra. All the teams competed with each other for getting into the knock out level of the tournament and eventually vie for the trophy.

Ranji Trophy West Zone Matches: The teams from the Western India were mainly considered by the organisers to be a part of the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1957-58. The organisers included a number of 5 teams in the Zone and the teams were the likes of Bombay, Baroda, Maharashtra, Saurashtra and Gujarat. The Bombay and Baroda were undoubtedly the best teams in this Zone and the two teams eventually got into the knock out level of the tournament.

Ranji Trophy Knock out Matches: The best two teams from each of the Zones of the tournament became successful to enter into the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1957-58. The matches of this level were mainly the likes of Quarter-Final, Semi-Final and the Final of the tournament and the teams like Hyderabad, Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan, Baroda, Services etc. took part in the knock level matches of the tournament.
