Kannauj is a city of historical significance in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Kannauj, as per mythology was the capital of the great Hindu kingdom as it was a centre during the Gupta Empire. In the Mahabharata, the city Kannauj is referred frequently. In the year 405 A.D. Fa-hien, a great Chinese pilgrim visited the city. Hiuen Tsang visited the city in 636 A.D. Kannauj was in the peak of glory under Harshavardhana's rule in the 7th century and was famous for its grandeur and prosperity. Kannauj was prominent for the hundreds of Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries.
