One of the widely celebrated religious festivals in Karnataka is Tula Sankramana. This is celebrated on a huge scale in the Coorg district. River Cauvery is the lifeline of South India. Like the Ganges this river too is integrally associated with the culture of Karnataka. The reference of this river is found in the ancient holy scripts and mythological texts. River Cauvery is considered sacred by the people, as it is their source of sustenance. Hence this river is worshiped by the local people. Tula Sankramana, celebrated in Coorg, is one such festival. Tula Sankramana, Karnataka usually takes place in the month of October.
On this day the people gather at the origin of the river and wait for the miracle to occur. According to popular belief Goddess Cauvery emerges out of the dry spring on a particular day at a specific time. It is widely believed that Devkanta was instructed by the Goddess to the family members of her father and waits for her in Balamuri. The family members of Chandravarma bathed in this water and were cleansed. Following this old tradition devotees come here to take a dip in the river. At this time of the year the city is resplendent with lights and colors.
