Affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, Sourashtra College began its journey in 1967 under the aegis of the Sourashtra College Council, with donations from philanthropists, who belong to the minority society, the Sourashtra Community. The college was registered on 24.9.1966. Initially till 1972, it was housed within the premises of the Sourashtra High School on Kamarajar Salai, Madurai-9. Later the College constructed a majestic building on Pasumalai Hill slopes that offers a panoramic view of Lord Muruga of Thirupparankundram Temple, lying on Madurai-Vilacheri road. Till 1972 only undergraduate courses and `Pre-University classes` were held. Presently there are about two thousand students with a team of one hundred and twenty five experienced staff members. The Sourashtra College is located in Pasumalai, Madurai.

The campus stands as an edifice, providing brilliant ambience that is favourable for pursuit of knowledge and essential character growth. Its goal is to offer education in varied streams of Science, Arts, Computer and Commerce. Apart from these, career oriented courses are also offered to the students of all classes and provides facilities for specific studies and research works in the fields of technology. Promotion of tradition and culture also is given due emphasis. A general body has been formed in Sourashtra College, consisting of nearly eight thousand and nine hundred members.

Sourashtra College admits students in various courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. One can pursue Bachelors in Science subjects like Biochemistry with Biotechnology, Microbiology, Physics, Computer Science, Hotel Management & Catering Science, Information Technology, Electronics & Communication. A Bachelors Degree in Commerce also is offered to its students.

Postgraduate courses include Masters in Science, Computer Science, Microbiology, Computer Science & Information Technology, Physics, Biotechnology. Masters in Commerce is another popular course of Sourashtra College.

There are several courses, like 1 year Certificate Course in Food Production, Postgraduate Diploma Course in Computer Application (PGDCA). The M.Phil Programmme offers specialisations with one-year duration. Specialisation can be done in subjects like Commerce and English. Professional courses like M.B.A. and M.C.A have been introduced for the benefit of the students. The Ph.D Programme in commerce also has drawn admiration of the students. To add more feathers to the glory, the Department of Commerce has started 3 Career Oriented Courses in accordance to the syllabi that has Madurai Kamaraj University`s approval. These are namely-- Certificate Course in Stock Market Operation, Export Management, Sales & Income tax Practice. Few vocational courses that are offered by Sourashtra College include Certificate Course in Biotechnology and Advanced Diploma Course in Biotechnology.

There are few more courses which were self financed and was started from 1993-94, with the motive of sufficing the needs of education amongst the aspiring students. All the faculty members are qualified and highly experienced; they are associated with theses courses. Few visiting teachers also are recruited for taking classes. Students of the Self-Finance courses at undergraduate level have their classes `in the afternoon between 1.45 p.m. and 6.05 p.m`. Classes for postgraduate courses are held from 9 `o` clock in the morning to 4 `o` clock in the evening.

Apart from academics, students also are encouraged to take part in several competitions and sports activities.
