Nelliyalam is the name of a panchayat town, which is positioned in the Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu. Without knowing its demographical situation in the true sense it becomes impossible for a person to catch hold of its salient characteristics more accurately. After orchestrating several surveys the demographers have succeeded in formulating reports that are related to its demography. In this connection a due mention may be made of the census report brought out in the year 2001. As per this report, Nelliyalam in Tamil Nadu has shown a total population counting of 42,400. Interestingly, like many other places male and female are divided into equal proportions. Children who fall into the age group of less than six years constitute 13 % of the total population.
A town's developmental progress can be identified from its literacy rates. In other words, literacy acts a vital indicator for gauging the growth and development of Nelliyalam. So far as this town is concerned, its high average literacy rate constitutes 74 %, which is even higher than that of India. (59.5 % is the average literacy rate of India) A huge gap is evident when the question of comparison arises between both male and female. Just like many other Indian places male literacy constitutes 80 %, while rate of female literacy also shows insignificance at just 67 %.
