Ramanathan Krishnan is another great player of Indian tennis who represented the country in the 1950`s and 60`s. One of the legends of Indian tennis, Ramanathan Krishnan was born on 11th April 1937. His father was a famous tennis player T.K.Ramanathan and gave him early training. Ramanathan had a huge potential and tennis took a grip on him from a very early stage. He soon became a known figure in national circuit won both the senior and junior championships eight times at a stretch. After winning so many national titles Krishnan concentrated on international tournaments and in a very short span of time he established himself in the top tens world.
Krishnan ushered in a new era as a 16-year old with a remarkable performance against Belgium in the Davis Cup Tournament in 1953. In 1954, beating Ashley Coopers, he won the junior Wimbledon and became the first Asian to win the title. Though he did not win the Wimbledon he reached two times in final and became the first Indian to do so. In 1960, Krishnan was ranked third in the world .He, however got 4th position in 1962.In Davis cup also he had outstanding records. He won 50 singles out of 69 and 19 of 29 doubles in partnership with Jaideep Mukherjee.
He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1969 and is also the recipient of Padma Shree in 1962 and Padma Bhusan in 1967. He could be said the architect of Indian tennis.
