Vivekananda College, initially known as Barisha College, was established in 1950 under the Dispersal Scheme of the State Government. The College is located at 269, Diamond Harbour Road, thakurpukur. Kolkata-700063. The purpose of setting up this college was to ease pressure for admission of students to the Colleges in the Calcutta Metropolis, as there was a constant pressure of increasing population from then East Pakistan, presently Bangladesh. The college first started in Barisha High School and later shifted to its newly built premises situated close to the school compound in 1953. That time it was only an Intermediate College.
In June 1956 the State Government sponsored to upgrade the college as a degree College and in the same year it was also brought under the Refugee Education Scheme of the Ministry of Rehabilitation, Government of India, with the State Government retaining control over it. During this period the College was named as Vivekananda College after the sacred name of Swami Vivekananda - the great patriot and social reformer, the pathfinder of the soul of India who propounded the education as the highest manifestation of human being.
Since with the increasing number of students the scarcity of accommodation was strongly felt, the College was again shifted in 1959 to its new spacious premises at Thakurpukur with an extensive campus area. The present campus area is of about 6.17 acres, where the present college buildings are situated. The Capital Grants were received from the Rahabilitation Ministry, Government of India. The original college building at Barisha was transformed into Women Section, which in 1961 became a separate independent college with the name `Vivekananda College for Women`.
The establishment of Vivekanada College, Barisha was able to meet the need of higher studies of local people of Thakurpukur area as well as nearby suburbs. Vivekananda College has already earned its fame as one of the premier institutions of higher studies in the State of West Bengal. The foremost contribution to this college is of the founder Principal, Late Dr. Sushil Kumar Ray, D. Sc.
