The Indian movie `Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna` is the story of two unhappily wedded couples that unfolds at the city of New York. The movie starts with Maya played by Rani Mukherjee sitting in park just some moments before her marriage to Rishi played by Abhishek Bachchan. She is still in doubt if she should marry him or not. Just at that time an unknown person, Dev played by Shah Rukh Khan, appears start talking to her. He gives her some piece of advice on marriages. But as a matter of fact he is in doubt regarding his own five years marriage with Rhea played by Preity Zinta. When Maya gets married, at the same time Dev meets an accident that changes his life in a greater way. The time moves further and it goes some years forward.

Presently Dev is an injured soccer player. He is dissatisfied cynic with an edgy character. His wife Rhea is very busy with her office as she is the major earner of the family. She is so busy that sometimes she misses some small things that enhances to break a family. Rhea is with highflying job in a fashion magazine. Dev looks after his son Arjun. On the other hand, Maya`s marriage with Rishi isn`t really working. She is a reserved schoolteacher who can`t give birth to a child. She is not much passionate like her husband Rishi. Samarjit a.k.a `Sexy Sam` played by Amitabh Bachchan is Rishi`s dad, and Kamaljit played by Kirron Kher plays the mom to Dev.

The conversation between Dev and Maya remains a glowing spark that re-ignites when they meet four years later. A slightly absurd situation makes the re-meeting of Dev and Maya possible at a train station. After that Maya and Dev start meeting regularly and they realize the consequences of their respective marriages. After trying some foolish things to make their marriages stronger they become tired. After this they become more and more drawn to each other.

Side by side to this there is another hilarious chapter of Rishi`s father, Sam who is a philanderer. He likes flirting around with foreigners. But there are some important moments when the Samarjit behind the Sam comes forward. It shows the shades of a emotional, sensible and also a wise man. He becomes fond of Kamaljeet whom he calls `Chandigarh` because of some reason.

The relation of the couples is getting worst. Dev always scold his son because of not playing soccer while Arjun`s interest lies in playing violin. Dev points out that Rhea is not giving time to Arjun. Rhea makes Dev understand that she is earning for the family so Dev don`t have any right to talk to her derogatory. She is rather clear about her vision that if any father does the thing it is acceptable by the society but if the case is related to mother the scenario is changed. She asks Dev why this discrimination lies in the society.

Dev and Maya soon realise that they are in love. The situation becomes worst when they realise they cannot tolerate their partners with their spouses. They want to become one and to fulfill their urge they sleep together. There was a point of no return and the time comes when Sam and Kamaljeet sees them embracing in front of station.

Sam is shattered because of the fate of his near and dear ones. He has a heart attack and in his death bed, he talks to Maya about some unconventional thoughts. He tells Maya to leave Rishi. His point is since no one is happy in their marriage. Things received a dead end and Dev and Maya decide to leave each other and go back to their respective spouses. They wanted to do an honest confession and clear the confusion about their extra-marital affair. Rishi and Rhea decide that everything is finished now and they should end it here. Now comes the twist in the film. Dev and Maya speak to each other over phone. Each of them wanted to see other one happy so they lie to each other. They say that everything is managed and they are happy in their respective family. Ultimately both the marriages are broken but Maya and Dev do not come together.

The film moves three years forward. By that time Rishi decides to marry some Cathy and comes to invite Maya for his marriage. In the marriage party Rhea sees Maya and understands that Rishi and Maya are not together. Rhea and Rishi realise that Dev and Maya are still alone. They request Maya to go to Dev who is about to live for Canada. Maya runs to the station. Dev sees Maya but he hides from her because of his previous lies. When the train starts moving Maya sees Dev. There is nothing to do but Dev pulls emergency breaks and comes to meet Maya. Dev proposes to Maya and she readily accepts. The film deals with an extra-ordinary subject but this case do happen in the society, only the thing is that people do not come and confess about their hidden love.
