University of Mumbai,located in Maharashtra is one of the first three Universities of India.It was established in the year 1857 following the Wood`s Education Dispatch".It was previously known as University of Bombay.Over the years the University has been funtioning as one of the premier Universities of the country and always tried to provide quality higher education to aspiring students of Maharashtra as well as India.It has shown ample achievements in various fields.In the initial years the University mainly offered undergraduate courses and gradually it started offering postgraduate courses and research programmes in various disciplines.

At present the universty offers various diploma,certificate undergraduate, post graduate and research based courses through several faculties including Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Technology. Faculty of Law, Faculty of Journalism. There are also other academic departments and institute spread over the two campuses of the university. The University has 354 affiliated colleges including colleges of Home Science, B.Pharm. Engineering, Medicine ,Nursing ,Unani Medicine, Vocational Subjects, Architecture, Fine Arts, Social Work, Law, Homeopathic Medicine, Management Studies .

There are several organisations affiliated to the University like J.J.College of Architecture, Indian Council of Social Science Research, Alkesh Dinesh Modi Institute of Investment Studies, University Institute of Chemical Technology Western Regional Instrumentation Center , Academy for Administrative Services Garware Institute of Career Education And Development and Academic staff college.

The name of the main librsry of the University is Jawaharlal Nehru Library which contains around 8,50,000 books in various subjects. It also houses many valuable documents,research works, Scientific Journals, Encyclopedias IMF reports , census reports,1200 rare manuscripts 30,000 microfilms etc.The University received five star status fron University Grant Commision.The University has started some new self-supporting courses recently.
