The Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (BCKV) was set up in 1974 with the mission to disseminate information relating to agriculture. It also conducts agricultural research as well as coordinates extension programmes. The different branches of study are Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering and other allied disciplines.
The Viswavidyalaya underwent structural changes in February 2001. Previously, it had a North Bengal campus at Coochbehar along with three northern Regional Stations at Kalimpong, Cooch Behar and Dinajpore. After February 2001, a new University has been created out of these campuses, which was named the Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidalaya (UBKV). This was done to decentralize the administration as well as concentrate on the agricultural needs of the North Bengal districts. With this division the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya looks after the agricultural needs only of the southern districts of West Bengal.
The University has a main campus, three Regional Research Stations and three Regional Research Substations. The three regional stations are located in three different agro- climatic zones. The Gayeshpur station has its substation at Chakdah which studies the New Alluvial Agro climatic Zone (NAZ), the Jhargram station has its substations at Raghunathpur and Sekhampur which conducts research on the Red laterite agro- climatic region and there is another one at Kakdwip which studies the Coastal Saline agro- climatic region. In the main campus there is the Directorate of Extension Education while the Farmers` Training Centre under the Directorate of Extension Education is at Kalyani for providing training to beginners. In the main campus there is a Medical Investigation Unit (MIU) to cater to the health care needs of the students and the staffs. There are two research units at Mohanpur namely the Crop Research Unit and the Nodule Research Unit.
The objective of the Vishwavidyalaya is to impart knowledge amongst the farmers and farm entrepreneurs and conduct research on agricultural related matters.
