
Deori tribe is reckoned for the cultural and traditional adherence. Moreover, Deori tribes have retained the heritage of their culture and tradition over the years. In other words, these Deori tribal communities have sustained their tribal identification from the onslaughts of the modern day influences. The word `Deori` is derived from the word `Deva` connoting God, the Supreme divinity.
Though the Deori tribe is basically concentrated in
Assam, the people of this tribe are also centred in some other states like Nagaland and
Arunachal Pradesh. In Assam only, near about twenty four thousand and six hundred Deori tribes reside in the nearby regions of the
Brahmaputra River. The language of the Deori tribal people is Deori language and it belongs to the famous Tibeto-Burman language family.
Tracing out the origin of the Deori tribal community, important opinions have been cited by quite a handful of anthropologists. According to their report, the Deori tribal community is one of the four divisions of the Chutiya tribal member, and is also linked to the Eastern Bodo-Garo. There is also a legend popular in the whole of the Deori tribal community. It is believed that after being ill treated by the Mongol rulers, these Deori tribes came down to India via Tibet and Burma and then had taken refuge in the mountainous regions of Cachar Hills. It has also been said that the Deori tribe incorporates three groups viz. Tengapania, Borgoya and Dibongia and these three groups are ramified into twenty four separate clans.
As far as the physical appearance of this Deori tribal community is concerned, the tribe has adapted to the identifiable feature to a wide extent. No other tribe has been able to retain their features in such a perfect manner. The reason is that these Deori tribes have abstained from free intermixing with other races and has abstained themselves from all sorts of racial intermixture. Also intermarriage is prohibited in the Deori tribal community. By nature, this Deori tribal community has developed ability to fighting hard, yet they are also hopeful, happy, and independent.
In order to sustain their livelihood, almost all the Deori tribes have taken up diverse professions. Till today these Deori tribes are stick to the age-old occupation of cultivation and farming. About ninety percent of the Deori tribal people are engaged in agriculture. In their area there is the lack of transportation and development of local markets and therefore hardly any industry has developed. Thus these Deori tribes produce rice applying the methods of irrigation in the fields. Quite a handful of Deori farmers also are there who carry on the shifting farming making use of method of `slash and burn`.
Just like many other tribal communities in the whole of Indian subcontinent, these Deori tribal communities also have built their houses near the side of the rivers. Bamboo is mainly used for constructing houses of these Deori tribes. Roofs are also thatched. These Deori houses are elevated to a height of 4 to 6 feet from the ground on timber or `bamboo stilts`. Inside the house of a Deori tribe, there is ample space, which is generally utilized for animals like goats, pigs, and fowl.
Societal structure of Deori tribes is quite unique thereby drawing attention of most of the eminent anthropologists of the Indian subcontinent. One of the distinguished societal features of the Deori tribe is that all the member of the whole of the extensive family units resides under one roof. These Deori tribes increase the building as the number of family members` increases.
Marriage has been regarded as a significant institution in the society of the Deori tribes. These Deori tribes, like many other Indian tribes, follow the rules of endogamy quite ardently. Special rites of marriage are also being followed by the Deori tribal community. That is to say, the Deori male must pay the customary bride price to the family members of the prospective bride. Also if he cannot afford to pay such a lump sum of money, the custom of the Deori tribe is that he will propose to work in the house of the bride family for a scheduled period of time.
Patriarchy is prevalent with the lineage following the patrilineal norms. In other words, all the properties and hereditary pattern are adapted from the Deori father. Need less to say that the sons possess equal shares of the property, with the Deori daughters claiming nothing. For better administration and control, Deori tribal community has been engineered under a village council. As per the rules of the council of Deori tribe, all its members need to maintain high ethical values.
Since the Deori tribes are very pious and religious minded, certain rites and rituals are followed. In the ancient times, the Deori acted as priests to the Chutiya tribal community. With lots of enthusiasm and veneration, these Deori tribes revere `mother goddesses` with sacrifices of pig and fowl.
A large number of people Deori tribal community also have taken up the religion of
Hinduism. Few Deori tribes follow
Buddhism. However, there are several Deori tribes practice indigenous religious beliefs quite religiously. Since there is no priestly class, all the religious rituals are executed by the village seniors who are however normally called Deoris.
The Deori has got a plethora of gods and goddesses. These Deori tribes worship domestic deities and the gods of the elements, as well as some of the
Hindu gods. These Deori tribes also worship the gods of the earth, sky, air, and fire. Interestingly, in a Deori society, there are no community shrines. Rather each and every family and village deities are worshipped independently. Moreover, the people of this group believe in `Kundimama,` which is the supreme power and they worship this form of supreme power in different form with great reverence.
The Deoris celebrate a number of festivals including Bihu which is considered by the entire community as a major festival. Magh Bihu and the Bohag Bihu are also the source of great entertainment to them. They celebrate these festivals with dance, songs and with much exuberance.
