Lumbar Spondylosis is a degenerative disorder of the spines, where the spine loses its flexibility.

Lumbar Spondylosis is a disease of lumbar vertebrae and it attacks women in general. It has been observed that about 90 Percent of backache patients suffer from what is ailed cervical or lumber spondylosis. It is a degenerative disorder in which the vertebral bone or the inter-vertebral disc becomes soft and loses shape. As a result of this, the spine loses its flexibility. In case of lumbar spondylosis, there is a tingling sensation in the legs, which can be detected in the X-ray. The term lumbar stenosis or spondylosis refers to any narrowing of the spinal canal. It is the bony overgrowths (osteophytes), predominantly which occurs at the anterior, lateral, and posterior aspects of the superior and inferior margins of vertebral centra or bodies. Spondylosis of the spine affects any of the joints in the lumbar region of the vertebrae. The vertebrae consist of individual bones which are joined together by discs which absorb shock, allow movement and provide cushioning. Lumbar region is the major weight bearing area of the body. This is a dynamic process and increases and is an inevitable concomitant, of age. This type of low back pain can be caused for variety of reasons.

The major causes of the Lumbar spondylosis include the slippage of one vertebra on another. It is characterised with misalignment and consequent narrowing of the canal. This slippage is called spondylolisthesis. Human lumbar region includes five vertebrae. Each has a specific gap between them. Due to ageing, injury in back, sudden fall or wearing of bones the gap between these vertebrae become abnormal. Consequently the nerves passing through these get pressurized. It causes pain and lumbar spondylosis is created. Lumbar spondylosis can develop due to factors such as obesity, sitting for prolonged periods also puts pressure on the lumbar vertebrae and causes lumbar spondylosis.

Other factors include trauma which makes a person more susceptible to developing lumbar spondylosis as well as heredity or family history are the results of Lumbar spondylosis. Though, Lumbar spondylosis is caused for several of factors, yet this disorder produces no symptoms. The most common symptom noticed to diagnose this disorder is sciatic pains in the back region. Symptoms of Lumbar Spondylosis can be pain, stress or heaviness in back, legs and foot.
