Calosanthes Indica is a small tree, growing over a large part of India. The Sanskrit name of this tree is "Syonaka". This tree is mentioned in various Ayurvedic treatises. The root-bark is used in medicine. It is considered astringent, tonic and useful in diarrhoea and dysentery. It is also an ingredient of dasamula, and is thus largely used in a great variety of disease. The tender fruits are described as grateful, carminative and stomachic.
Dose of Syonaka in Medicine
The root-bark is enclosed within some leaves and a layer of clay and roasted. The juice expressed from this roasted bark is given in diarrhoea and dysentery with the addition of mocharasa (gum of Bombax Afalabarium)
In otorrhoea, Sarangadhara recommends the use of an oil prepared by boiling, over a gentle fire, sesamum oil with a paste made of the root-bark of Calosanthes Indica.
