Saru Chakuli, Oriya RecipeSaru Chakuli also called pitha is rice based fried flat cake. Saru Chakuli is similar to a South Indian dish called dosa but sweet in taste. This notable recipe from the land of Odisha is quite popular among the children. This nutritious dish is easy to prepare and good to eat.

History of Saru Chakuli:
The origin of Saru Chakuli can be traced back during the early 4th century BC when Buddha had tasted the Chakra apoopa from two merchants coming from Kalinga Kingdom to Magadha. Saru Chakuli can be prepared in various ways; among them two are as follows.

General Ingredients of Saru Chakuli:

•2 cups rice
•1 cup black gram
•1 tablespoon refined edible oil Salt to taste

Method of Preparing Saru Chakuli:

•Soak rice and black gram (skinless) in water for about 4 hours.
•Then grind the rice and black gram to a fine paste. Add salt to it.
•Then add water to get a batter and whip well.
•Heat a non stick frying pan on medium flame.
•Spread a little oil on the pan.
•Lower the flame.
•Take the batter in a big spoon and spread the batter on the pan in a round shape, like a dosa or an omelet.
•Turn the pitha upside down and take it out carefully.
•Make as many pithas as required by following this method.
•Grease the surface of pan with edible oil once every after two or three pithas.
•Serve with dalama, coconut chutney, sambar or kheer/ khiri.

Ingredients of Saru Chakuli using Khoya and Coconut:

•1 cup raw rice
•1/4 cup black gram
•1/2 coconut
•1/4 tsp soda bicarb
•2 tbsp sugar
•Salt to taste
•1 cup water
•1 cup sweetened Khoya

Method of Preparing Saru Chakuli:

•Soak the rice and black gram for 2 hrs.
•Grind rice, black gram, and coconut with little water.
•Mix sugar, salt and soda. Keep for 2 hrs.
•Add little water to get a spreadable consistency.
•Take a pan heat it in medium fire.
•Spread the batter put little oil on top (make like dosa)
•Now put the sweetened khoya and fold to get a d shape.
•Serve with any chutney.

Saru Chakuli can be seen at various restaurants of Odisha. It can also be made at home and can be tasted as a breakfast item or snack item in the evening. Saru Chakuli is also suitable to serve the guests to sweeten their mouth whenever they are invited for any party.
