The thirty-first yoga sutra explains about a sadhaka`s dedication towards meditation, that he is capable to subdue the pangs of thirst or hunger. This is done by sarhyama on the concavity of the throat.
kantha throat
kupe the pit, the well
ksut hunger
pipasa thirst
nivrttih subdued, conquered
By sarhyama on the pit of the throat, the yogi overcomes hunger and thirst.
By sarhyama on the pit of the throat (khecari mudra), a yogi can check the stings of hunger and thirst and conquer them.
Kantha kitpa represents the visuddhi cakra of later yoga texts, which is believed to be situated in the region of the pit of the throat. (Certain mudras, for instance kaka mudra and khecari mudra, helps to defeat hunger and thirst).
