Ghorai Dance has been a popular pastime among the agricultural inhabitants in the hill state of Chamba. These dances are performed for the sole purpose of entertainment and not for any religious feast or seasonal celebration. Men and women do not dance together. Each sex has its personal set of dances and those of the women dances are known as `Ghorai.` In this type of dances the women form two circles around which they dance together. The gestures of the dances are extremely slow but graceful. In includes the swaying of the body to the left or right at each step effortlessly. While moving the body they also raise the arms alternately above the head and also dropping them towards the ground with sinuous movements of fingers. The dances are accompanied with rhythmical songs, at times associated with some old legend. The two groups sing alternately with the second repeating the words sung by the first group.
