Inspired from the various festivals from the southern states of India, the Brahmaputra Beach Festival is a three day long open air festival that is held in Guwahati. The festival is convened on the ravine beaches of the Brahmaputra River in association with the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC).
Organized by the Assam Boat Racing and Rowing Association (ABRRA), the aim of the Brahmaputra Beach Festival is to promote indigenous culture, crafts and popularising traditional sports of Assam. It is one of the festivals of Assam that coincides with Magh Bihu, which is the harvest festival in the state.
Events of Brahmaputra Beach Festival
Celebrated annually on the month of January, the Brahmaputra Beach Festival is a representation of the indigenous culture of the state. Since it is a beach festival, the beaches are occupied to set up fairs.
Adventurous sports like Beach cricket, Beach volleyball, river rafting, canoeing and wind surfing, ice skating and kayaking are included in the festival. Along with these, a range of aero sports like ballooning, paragliding and hang gliding are a major part of the festival. Keeping in par with the contemporary sports, the Brahmaputra Beach Festival also has few traditional games like elephant races, egg breaking and cock fighting.
Children in the Brahmaputra Beach Festival also find themselves engrossed in competitions like kite flying and sit and draw. Exhibitions of traditional crafts of Assam present the visitors some of the magnificent artworks of the country. One of the main purposes of the Brahmaputra Beach Festival is the augmentation of tourism in the state of Assam. The colourful and effervescent beach during the festival creates a spectacular view for the visitors.
