Manahparyaya Jnana in Jainism is a direct knowledge of the thoughts of the minds of others. It is gained without the help of any medium or agency. Just like Avadhi Jnana, Manahparyaya Jnana is an extra sensory perception which cannot be attained by ordinary persons. Only a soul in its higher progression stage may acquire this type of knowledge. A person possessing faculty can directly cognise the other’s mind. This faculty is confined to the abode of human beings. It depends on a person’s particular mode of right conduct. It is conditioned by a strict mental and physical discipline.
Classification of Manahparyaya Jnana
Manahparyaya is of two varieties:
1. Rujumati - It is purer and everlasting i.e. lasts up to the dawn of omniscience.
2. Vipulamati - It is less pure and sometimes trembles too. Can be lost if behaviour is unethical.
Manahparyaya Jnana is not a complete knowledge as only a few modes of mind are known and not all. Only ascetics can acquire this ability. It also has limitation of time and space.
