James Rivett Carnac, formally known as Sir James Rivett Carnac, 1st Baronet, was one of the prominent Governors of Bombay Presidency from the year 1839 to 1842, in undivided India.

James Rivett Carnac, formally known as Sir James Rivett Carnac, 1st Baronet, was one of the prominent Governors of Bombay Presidency from the year 1839 to 1842, in undivided India under the rule of the British Empire. Bombay Presidency was a province of British India, which was initially formed in the 17th century at Surat as a trading post for the British East India Company. He was also a well known British peer and a colonial administrator in British dominated India.
Sir James Rivett Carnac was born on 11 November 1784 in Bombay (now Mumbai). His family name came around in the year 1801, after his father was made testamentary by General John Carnac, husband of Elizabeth Rivett and his brother-in-law. After the completion of his education, served in the British East India Company in British dominated India from the year 1801. He also acted as a director of the East India Company for several periods from 1827 to 1838. Later in May 1838, James Rivett Carnac was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Eventually he was appointed as a Company Governor of Bombay and served in office from 31 May 1839 to 27 April 1841 for a period of 2 years.
Carnac later became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Sandwich from 1837 to 1839, and was appointed as a baronet in the year 1836. Sir James Rivett Carnac, 1st Baronet died on 28 January 1846.
