In the short story titled Kanal Nir, Komakal explains the feelings of regret of an aged person after he witnessed the romantic relationship of a young couple. He feels sorry for agreeing to an arranged marriage in his younger days. As a result, the man feels that he has missed an important phase of life which was worth experiencing. Thus now the aged man appreciates the relationship of the young couple and blesses their love. Later in the course of the story, the elderly person finds out that the younger man, who was in a romantic relationship, has gotten married to some other woman and not to his original lover. Therefore he presumed that the earlier love was some how ended. Bur after a period of few weeks after the marriage of the young man, the old person again witnesses the original couple whom he saw the first time and regretted his own marriage. The young lovers had come to the same park and their love still continues, even after the male lover has already married. Thus the elderly person realizes that what he believed to be true and genuine love is in reality a mirage. This realization helps him to appreciate his own marriage and his relationship with his wife. Thus it can be said that through her adept writing and inventive themes, Komakal (Rajalatcumi) has proved her skills as one of the foremost women writers in modern Tamil literature. |
