Some of the well renowned places of tourist interest in Golaghat District are as follows - Kaziranga National Park is situated on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River. It is one of the most popular sites of the district and is popular throughout the world. Established in the year 1908 as a game reserve, it became a national park in the year 1974 and is inscribed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) list of World Natural Heritage Site in the year 1985. It has an area of 430 sq kms and lies between the Brahmaputra River and the Karbi Anglong hills. Much of the park is swampy intermingled with large water bodies, patches of elephant grass, scattered trees and bushes. The wildlife of this park includes several species like the great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros, tiger, leopard, elephant, wild pig, hog deer, swamp deer, buffalo and other water fowl. Moreover, many migratory birds visit Kaziranga in the winter season. For viewing wildlife in the swamp land, there are several watch towers in Kaziranga National Park. Elephant and jeep rides are also available. The park usually remains closed from May to October. The best time to visit this park is from December to March. Garampani is a hot water spring inside the Nambar Reserve Forest, about 18 kms South of Golaghat town. Winter season is considered as the best season to visit this place as one may get to see herds of wild elephants grazing by the side of the highway. Perched on a hill top, Neghereting Shiva Mandir is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was built by the Ahom kings. It is surrounded by lush green tea gardens and is a popular picnic spot. Scattered on the hill top are the Deopahar Ruins of Numaligarh. These are the ruins of an ancient temple with statues lying shattered and greenery sprouting from the heads of others. From the top of the hill, one can get a view spanning across Numaligarh Tea Estate and nearby Karbi Anglong hills and the sight of the nearby forests is simply divine. Uncle Robin's Children Museum is located on the main road in Golaghat town and within the residence of Dr Robin Banerjee, a naturalist of International repute. The museum is full of dolls, artefacts, mementos, movies and other personal collections of Dr Banerjee's lifetime. There are 587 dolls and 262 other show pieces. Moreover, there are 194 paintings and 19 Award winning photographs. All the paintings were done by Dr. Robin Banerjee and all the photographs were taken by him and are associated with wildlife. There are 93 pieces artefacts. Like for instance, Naga Warrior's head hunting basket, small beautiful horse made up of Turquoise and many more. Further, there are several collections of documentary films started from 1953 to 1998. How to Reach Golaghat District Golaghat District of Assam is well connected by road and railway services with the rest of the country. By Air: Air services operate flight services in the Jorhat-Kolkata and Jorhat-Guwahati routes. By Train: Train services are available from Dimapur, Tinsukia District, Dibrugarh and Guwahati. Train service also operates from Golaghat town station to Jorhat District. Important railway stations in the district are Sarupathar, Furkating and Kamarbondha. Golaghat district does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is Rowraiah near Jorhat located at a distance of 55 kms from Golaghat town. By Water: River transportation link on Brahmaputra River exists between Gomari Ghat in Sonitpur District and Dhansiri Ghat of Bokakhat sub-division under Golaghat District. By Road: The major road connecting to the district are National Highway 37 and National Highway 39. NH 37 enters through Golaghat Nagaon border at Bagori and it passes through important places like Kohora, Kaziranga National Park, Bokakhat, Numaligarh town, Kamargaon, Dergaon before entering Jorhat District. A road link also exists from Golaghat town to Wokha of Nagaland. |
