B.C Khanduri , Indian BJP Politician
Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, ex-army man, presently serves as the chief minister of the Indian state, Uttarakhand.

Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, member of the 14th Lok Sabha, is presently serving as the Chief minister of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. This member of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), represents the Garhwal constituency of Uttarakhand. He has also served as a minister in the Indian federal government.

On 1st october 1934, Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri was born to Jai Ballabh Khanduri and Durga Devi Khanduri at Dehradun. He studied at Allahabad University, College of Military Engineering, Pune , Institute of Engineers, New Delhi and Institute of Defence Management, Secunderabad and obtained B.Sc, B.E, M.I.E (India), long Defence Management Course. From 1954 to 1990, he served in Corps of Engineers, Indian Army. In the year1982, for distinguished services in the Indian Army, he was conferred Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) by the President of India. B.C KhanduriAfter retirement from Indian Army, he joined politics and was elected to Lok Sabha from Garhwal in Uttarakhand in 1991 and in subsequent elections. On 17th February, 1964, he married to Aruna Khanduri of whom he has one son and one daughter.

As a student he participated in the freedom struggle of India. The various posts which he held throughout his career in the Indian Army are:
  • Commander of Regiment during Indo-Pak War, 1971
  • Commander of an Engineer Brigade
  • Chief Engineer
  • Additional Military Secretary, Army Headquarters
  • Additional Director General, engineer-in-chief`s Branch, Army Headquarters.


  • After he joined politics, he was made the Chief Whip of Bharatiya Janta Party, Parliamentary Party, Lok Sabha and held the post from 1991 to 1996. Subsequently, he served as:
  • Member, National Executive, BJP- 1992-97
  • Vice-president, BJP, Uttar Pradesh- 1992-97
  • Re-elected to the 12th Lok Sabha (2nd term) Chief whip, BJP, lok Sabha.
  • 1998-99 Member, Committee on Public Accounts Member, Rules Committee
  • Member, Business Advisory Committee
  • Member, Committee on Home Affairs; (Departments of, (i) Law and Company Affairs; and (ii) Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions) and Convenor of its Sub-Committee on Personnel Policy of Central Para-Military Forces (CPMFs)
  • Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Defense 1999
  • Re-elected to 13th Lok Sabha (3rd term) Chief Whip, BJP Parliamentary Party, Lok Sabha 1999-2000
  • Member, Wild Life Society of India-
  • Member, Committee on Public Undertakings 1999-2000
  • Member, Committee on Ethics-2000-01
  • 2000 onwards Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas
  • 2000-2003 Member, National Executive, Bharaitya Janata Party
  • 7 Nov. 2000- Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Road Transport onwards and Highways


  • B.C KhanduriHis social and cultural activities: He was the Patron of Parvatiya Sanskriti Parishad, Dehradun, 1990-93; also managing "Chandra Ballabh Trust", an Educational Trust started in 1917 by his grand father in Garhwal. President, (i) Poorva Sainik Seva Parishad, Uttar Pradesh, 1992 onwards; and (ii) Uttaranchal Pradesh Sangarsh Samiti, 1994-96;Member, Wild Life Society of India; Member, G.B. Pant Himalaya Environment and Development Committee.

    He led the BJP in February 2007, to the victory in assembly elections in Uttarakhand. Subsequently, he was chosen to be the new Chief Minister of the state. His runner-up T.P.S. Rawat, in the 2004 Lok Sabha poll, has resigned from Dhumakot seat. To make way for Khanduri to be the independent MLA, Rajendra Singh Bhandari had also offered to resign.

    As Chief Minister, among Khanduri`s first achievements has been to cut expenditures by cutting down security to politicians and administrative officials, cutting back on their allowance for foreign trips and also restricting the usage of the Chief Minister`s discretional fund to only district magistrate-approved projects. He toured all but one district of Uttarakhand to measure the peoples` concerns Following his election.
